2025 College Football Season Preview: Projecting Power 4 Conference Winners

The 2025 college football season begins with high expectations in the newly aligned Power 4 era. The SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12 each have legitimate contenders with playoff aspirations, but only four teams will emerge as champions of their leagues. Depth, quarterback play, and coaching experience will be the deciding factors.

SEC: Texas Ready to Take Over

The SEC is still the most talent-rich conference in college football, but the balance of power may be shifting. Texas enters 2025 with a roster that looks built to win immediately. The Longhorns have one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, a loaded wide receiver corps, and a defense that can stand up to the SEC’s physical demands. Georgia remains the standard after years of dominance, and Alabama is quickly rebuilding under Kalen DeBoer, but Texas has the mix of skill, toughness, and momentum to make a title run.

Favorite: Texas
Contenders: Georgia, Alabama, LSU

Big Ten: Penn State Poised for a Breakthrough

Penn State enters 2025 with its most complete team in the James Franklin era. The Nittany Lions feature a defense stacked with NFL-caliber talent and an offense that has the balance needed to take down both Michigan and Ohio State. Michigan is still as physical as ever and will grind opponents down, while Ohio State boasts elite speed and skill. Oregon brings explosive offense into the mix, but this feels like the year Penn State finally seizes control of the conference.

Favorite: Penn State
Contenders: Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon

ACC: Clemson Looks to Reclaim Its Throne

After a few seasons of inconsistency, Clemson looks prepared to reestablish itself as the ACC’s top program. Dabo Swinney’s Tigers bring back one of the most complete defenses in the country, and if the offense shows improvement, they have the firepower to return to playoff contention. Florida State will still be in the hunt after its resurgence, but depth issues could be a concern late in the year. Miami, meanwhile, is building momentum and could surprise. Still, Clemson has the balance and experience to finish on top.

Favorite: Clemson
Contenders: Florida State, Miami

Big 12: Utah’s Experience Leads the Pack

The Big 12 may be the most unpredictable of the Power 4, but Utah’s physical brand of football and championship-tested roster give them a slight edge. Kyle Whittingham’s team thrives in big games, and that steadiness could make the difference in a crowded field. Kansas State’s discipline and Oklahoma State’s offensive creativity make them dangerous, while Arizona and Colorado add intrigue to the conference race. Expect the Big 12 to produce chaos, but Utah is best positioned to handle it.

Favorite: Utah
Contenders: Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Arizona

The Power 4 conferences each bring their own drama, but as the season begins, Texas, Penn State, Clemson, and Utah look like the best bets to claim their conference crowns. With the expanded playoff format, though, there’s little margin for error, and surprises are guaranteed before December.
