Boo Birds Erupt as Cleveland Browns QB Switch Sparks Fresh Cleveland Controversy

STWF Sports | Dec. 22, 2025 – It would not be a Cleveland Browns season without quarterback controversy. Even when circumstances dictate the decision, drama seems to find its way under center in Northeast Ohio.

Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills offered another chapter. The Browns battled bravely despite defeat, but the loudest moment at Cleveland Browns Stadium came when rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders briefly left the field for treatment on a bloodied pinky finger—an injury that was not immediately apparent to fans in attendance.

With Cleveland driving inside the red zone, head coach Kevin Stefanski turned to fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. The move was necessary given Sanders’ condition, but the explanation did little to calm the crowd. Boos poured down from the stands, fueled by the belief that Sanders had been pulled rather than forced out.

Fans make their feelings clear

Sanders had earned the benefit of the doubt. The fifth-round pick opened the game flawlessly, completing all five of his passes and finding tight end Harold Fannin Jr. for the game’s opening touchdown. The Browns led early, and the rookie looked poised once again.

That context made the reaction to Gabriel’s appearance particularly harsh. On his only snap, Gabriel was sacked, stalling the drive and forcing Cleveland to settle for a field goal. The boos grew louder, and the optics suggested a fan base fiercely protective of the quarterback who has shown the most spark in a difficult season.

After the game, Sanders moved quickly to set the record straight—and to defend his teammate.

Sanders takes responsibility

“You can look online and see what my finger looked like,” Sanders said. “I threw Quinshon a little route then. I was like, damn. It was over with.”

Sanders admitted he tried to return to the field sooner than he should have, knowing how difficult it is to be thrust into action with little preparation.

“I did everything to come back because I didn’t want to put Dillon in a bad situation,” he said. “When I was the backup, it’s tough. You don’t get reps.

“I said, ‘my bad, bro,’ for putting you in that situation. It’s not ideal and I want him to be prepared for when he’s out there.”

The moment echoed earlier frustration directed at Stefanski this season, when quarterback changes were met with fan anger. At that time, however, Sanders had not yet displayed the consistency and command he has shown over the last several weeks.

An unsettled quarterback room

The Browns now face a familiar offseason puzzle. Sanders has started the last five games since replacing Gabriel during the Week 12 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Gabriel, a third-round pick, had previously taken over from veteran Joe Flacco, who started the season’s first four games before being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Still looming over the entire situation is Deshaun Watson, the $230 million investment whose tenure has been derailed by injuries and inconsistency. Watson is working his way back from an Achilles injury, but his future with the franchise remains clouded.

With two rookies logging meaningful starts and another top-five draft pick likely in April, Cleveland must decide whether to reset the position once again or commit to the youth already in the building. Sanders’ recent form—and a quarterback class viewed as underwhelming—could influence the organization to stay the course.

Pressure building beyond the huddle

The quarterback debate does not exist in a vacuum. General manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski both face scrutiny after back-to-back losing seasons. Berry’s 2025 draft class has provided optimism, potentially buying him more time.

Stefanski, however, may not be as insulated. Despite being a two-time Coach of the Year, his 6–24 record over the last two seasons looms large. A coaching change would almost certainly bring a new evaluation of the quarterback room, further complicating the future for Sanders and Gabriel.

For now, Sanders remains the fan favorite, and his willingness to shoulder responsibility only strengthens that bond. But in Cleveland, quarterback drama is never far away—and it’s clear this storyline is far from finished.
