Brandon Ingram Takes a Dig at Pelicans Fans During Raptors Media Day
Brandon Ingram, now a member of the Toronto Raptors, used his first media day with his new team to throw a subtle jab at his former fan base in New Orleans.
Ingram was dealt to Toronto before last season’s trade deadline while still sidelined by a season-ending ankle injury. He spent five and a half seasons with the Pelicans, earning an All-Star selection and the NBA’s Most Improved Player award in 2020. His best statistical season came in 2022–23, when he averaged 24.7 points per game, though his numbers dipped to 20.8 points the following year.
Despite his individual success, the Pelicans struggled to find postseason consistency during his tenure. The team made the playoffs twice but was eliminated in the first round both times. Overall, New Orleans posted just two winning seasons during his stretch there and never advanced past the opening round.
At media day in Toronto, Ingram praised Raptors fans while indirectly criticizing Pelicans supporters:
“The most impressive thing for me (about Toronto) is seeing every seat in the arena filled up, every single game, no matter winning or losing. That definitely wasn’t there in New Orleans, having every seat filled and everybody showing love, whether we’re down or very consistent.”
The remark highlighted a contrast between the passionate Raptors fan base and what Ingram saw as inconsistent support in New Orleans, and it didn’t go unnoticed.
The Raptors and Pelicans won’t meet until March, when they face off twice, including Ingram’s first return to New Orleans since the trade. His comments may set the stage for a chilly reception when he steps back into the Smoothie King Center.
- With both teams aiming to stay in the playoff mix, that matchup could prove significant—and all eyes will be on whether Pelicans fans pack the arena for Ingram’s return.
