Coach P Era Tips Off: UNO Privateers Set to Face Sacramento State in Star-Studded Southwest Shootout

NEW ORLEANS | October 17, 2025 – The lights will be bright and the atmosphere electric on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena, as the University of New Orleans Privateers tip off the 2025–26 season against the Sacramento State Hornets in the Southwest Shootout. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.

This matchup marks a new beginning for Privateer basketball and the unofficial launch of the “Coach P Era” — a rejuvenation of the UNO men’s basketball program led by Master P, the hip-hop mogul turned executive, who now serves as Vice President of Basketball Operations. His arrival has already sparked a surge of energy throughout the program — both on and off the court.

Adding another layer of intrigue, the visiting Hornets are led by newly appointed General Manager Dr. Shaquille O’Neal, making Saturday’s contest a star-powered showcase featuring two of the most recognizable names in basketball and entertainment.

New Era for the Privateers

The Privateers enter their second season under head coach Stacy Hollowell with a largely rebuilt roster. Only two players return from last season’s squad, but Hollowell and his staff have made major strides on the recruiting trail, assembling a group that combines athleticism, experience, and versatility.

Among the returners is MJ Thomas, a sophomore forward who impressed in his debut season. Thomas averaged 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, leading the Southland Conference in rebounding and ranking among the nation’s top 80 in the category. His rebounding mark was the highest by a Privateer since Hector Romero (2002–03), and his leadership on the glass will once again be crucial for UNO’s interior presence.

Joining him is Jakevion Buckley, one of the most impactful transfers in the conference this offseason. The former Southeastern Louisiana standout earned First Team All-Southland and All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Buckley’s defensive tenacity and playmaking ability should provide a stabilizing force for the new-look roster.

The Privateers also added Coleton Benson, a sharpshooter who spent two seasons at Texas State after beginning his collegiate career at Army. Benson averaged 9.1 points per game and connected on 39 percent of his three-point attempts last season. His ability to stretch the floor will be critical in Hollowell’s uptempo offensive system.

With a mix of transfers, underclassmen, and renewed excitement surrounding the program, the Privateers are aiming to establish an identity built on toughness, discipline, and speed.

Sacramento State’s Fresh Start Under Bibby and Shaq

While UNO enters the matchup with a few returning contributors, Sacramento State arrives in New Orleans with a completely new roster. Led by first-year head coach Mike Bibby, the former NBA point guard brings both professional pedigree and a modern approach to the Hornets’ program.

One of Bibby’s most intriguing players is Mikey Williams, a high-profile transfer from UCF and former top-20 national recruit. Williams has long been regarded as one of the most talented guards in his class, known for his scoring creativity and highlight-reel athleticism.

Also joining the Hornets is Prophet Johnson, a 6’6” forward who transferred from Fairfield University after a breakout 2024–25 season. Johnson averaged 13.3 points and 7.7 rebounds, earning All-MAAC Third Team honors. His versatility will make him a focal point of Sacramento State’s offense early in the year.

With Shaquille O’Neal overseeing basketball operations, expectations have risen quickly in Sacramento. Between Bibby’s leadership and the influx of athletic talent, the Hornets will present a dynamic challenge for UNO in their home opener.

A New Game Day Experience at Lakefront Arena

Saturday’s contest won’t just be about basketball — it will also showcase the Privateers’ upgraded fan experience. Thanks to the efforts of Master P and the UNO athletic department, Lakefront Arena now features a brand-new center-hung Jumbotron, four LED lighting columns, and fog effects to enhance team introductions and in-game entertainment.

Fans can expect a vibrant atmosphere with appearances by the St. Augustine Marching 100, as well as halftime performances by local hip-hop artists T99ZY and Mr. Trip Out. A host of local celebrities and former UNO greats, including NBA and NFL alumni, are expected to attend.

As the Privateers usher in a new era under Coach P and Coach Hollowell, Saturday’s matchup promises to be more than just a basketball game — it’s a celebration of culture, community, and the return of swagger to New Orleans basketball.
