Joe Dumars Says He’s Been in Communication With Zion Ahead of Season
Pelicans’ basketball operations head Joe Dumars says that his discussions with Zion Williamson lately have centered on the ideas of responsibility and accountability. Dumars emphasized that while natural talent is crucial, it isn’t sufficient by itself — greatness, he said, demands that a player also accept and live up to what comes with it.
Given Zion’s elite-level ability — from powerful low-post play to high-flying athleticism — the expectation is that he doesn’t just produce on the court, but also step into a leadership and duty-bearing role. Dumars made clear that Williamson must be someone who is reliable, consistent, and takes ownership, both for his performance and how he conducts himself.
In recent seasons, injuries have often held Zion back. He has never played more than 70 games in a season, and various concerns — including about conditioning — have followed him. With the Pelicans coming off a very rough season (21–61), much of their hopes for turning things around rest on Zion staying healthy, being available, and embracing this broader responsibility.
Ultimately, Dumars’ message is that Zion’s role is expanding — not just to score and star — but to lead and be accountable, as part of what it takes for the team to improve and compete.
