Fever Win Commissioner’s Cup Over Lynx Without Clark

The Indiana Fever pulled off an impressive upset in the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final, defeating the heavily favored Minnesota Lynx 74‑59 on Tuesday in Minneapolis. Despite missing their star rookie Caitlin Clark due to a groin injury, Indiana rallied behind strong performances from across the roster.

Key Highlights:

  • Natasha Howard led the way with a dominant double‑double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, and notching 2 steals. She was named the game’s MVP unanimously.

  • Aliyah Boston added another double‑double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, plus 6 assists. Sophie Cunninghamcontributed 13 points off the bench, and guards Aari McDonald and Kelsey Mitchell each scored 12.

  • After falling behind 20‑12 early, the Fever took control with an 18‑0 run to end the second quarter. The Lynx went scoreless for over eight minutes, a momentum shift that defined the game.

Defensively, Indiana held Minnesota to just 34.9% shooting and forced 16 turnovers—marking the Lynx’s worst offensive performance of the season.

Although Caitlin Clark couldn’t suit up, she was present on the bench and active on social media. Videos showed the Fever celebrating with champagne, dancing, and even drinking from the trophy chalice. Clark joined the celebration virtually and later in person, injecting energy and humor throughout the night.

In one Instagram Live clip, Clark exclaimed, “Everybody in the league is sick,” prompting laughter and agreement from teammates. She also crashed a postgame interview to keep the mood lively.

Financially, the win was significant. The Fever secured a $500,000 prize, which broke down to about $50,000 per player—more than double what players earn for winning a WNBA championship. Clark noted the irony of that payout during a celebratory livestream.

Head coach Stephanie White acknowledged that although the Commissioner’s Cup doesn’t count toward regular-season standings, the victory was meaningful. It showcased the team’s toughness and depth and could be a real momentum-builder.

The Fever now return to Indiana for a five‑game home stretch, looking to capitalize on their recent success. With Clark gradually returning to workouts, the team remains cautious but optimistic. She’s expected to rejoin the lineup soon, though there’s no rush as her long-term health remains the priority.

This Commissioner’s Cup win is the first in franchise history, and for a young team filled with potential, it may just be the spark they’ve been waiting for.
