MiLB Game Recap: AARON ZAVALA SMASHES NINTH HOMER IN 6-4 DEFEAT TO WIND SURGE

WICHITA, Kansas (July 27, 2025) – Despite a spirited rally in the late innings, the Frisco RoughRiders came up short, falling 6-4 to the Wichita Wind Surge on Sunday afternoon at Equity Bank Park. Wichita slugger Andrew Cossetti powered the hosts with two home runs, while Frisco’s Aaron Zavala responded with a blast of his own in the losing effort.

The defeat capped a challenging week for the RoughRiders (9-17, 47-48), who dropped five of six games in Wichita to close the series. The Wind Surge (15-12, 52-44), meanwhile, rode hot bats and steady bullpen work to solidify their standing in the Texas League playoff race.

Wichita Strikes Early

The Wind Surge wasted little time seizing control. In the bottom of the first, Cossetti turned on a fastball from Frisco starter Ben Anderson, sending it deep over the left-field wall for a three-run homer that gave Wichita a commanding 3-0 lead. The blast immediately energized the home crowd and put Frisco in an early hole.

But the RoughRiders showed some fight in the second inning. Leading off, Zavala drilled his ninth home run of the season to right field, slicing the deficit to 3-1. The shot marked his most in a single season since 2022, a promising sign for the veteran outfielder who has battled injuries and inconsistency in recent years.

Cossetti Powers Wichita

Wichita quickly regained momentum in the bottom of the second. Kyler Fedko lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home a run, pushing the lead back to 4-1. Anderson battled through traffic but couldn’t keep the powerful Wind Surge lineup quiet for long.

Cossetti struck again in the sixth, belting his second homer of the day — a solo shot that stretched the advantage to 5-1. The Wind Surge catcher finished the afternoon with four RBIs, making him the difference-maker in a game where both bullpens were forced to work under pressure.

Frisco Rallies Late

Refusing to go quietly, the RoughRiders mounted a comeback in the seventh inning. Ian Moller provided the spark, blooping a two-run single into shallow right field to trim the deficit to 5-3. Moments later, Moller came around to score on a wild pitch, suddenly narrowing the gap to one run at 5-4.

With the tying run just 90 feet away, Frisco had momentum firmly in hand, but Wichita reliever John Stankiewicz slammed the door on further damage. The RoughRiders never drew even again.

In the eighth, Kala’i Rosario delivered the dagger. The Wind Surge outfielder launched a towering solo home run to left-center, restoring a two-run cushion at 6-4.

Frisco brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but reliever Cole Percival shut down the rally, working a clean inning to notch his save.

Pitching Performances

Wichita’s bullpen carried the load after starter Darren Bowen exited early. Stankiewicz (2-4) earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Percival followed with a flawless ninth to close the door.

Anderson (4-5) took the loss for Frisco, surrendering four runs on seven hits over five innings. Despite recording five strikeouts, the right-hander struggled to contain Wichita’s long ball threat. On the positive side, reliever Gerardo Carrillo extended his scoreless streak to nine straight outings with a strong eighth inning.

Notes to Know

  • Wichita claimed five of six games in the series, marking one of the Riders’ toughest stretches of the season.

  • Zavala’s ninth homer was his highest total since his 2022 campaign with High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco.

  • Moller’s two-run single in the seventh gave him 15 RBIs on the season.

  • Carrillo has not allowed a run in nine consecutive outings, covering 10.2 innings.

What’s Next

The RoughRiders return to Riders Field on Tuesday, July 29, opening a six-game home series against the San Antonio Missions (Padres affiliate). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as Frisco looks to regain momentum and climb back into contention in the Texas League South.
