Game Recap: Tatis Powers Padres Past Rangers 4-1 to Win Series at Petco Park

SAN DIEGO, Ca. (July 6, 2025) —Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. was clutch, sparking the San Diego Padres  4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers and get a key series win at Petco Park.

In front of a packed holiday weekend crowd, the Padres used timely hitting, solid pitching, and a touch of flair from their star outfielder to claim their second win in three games against the defending World Series champions. With the victory, San Diego improved to 47-41 and closed the weekend with momentum as they continue their push in the competitive NL West.

Tatis Delivers at the Right Time

Tatis, who will head to the All-Star Game later this month, tied the game in the bottom of the third inning after reaching on a single, advancing to second on a fielder’s choice, and crossing the plate on a two-out base hit. He wasn’t done. In the bottom of the fourth, Tatis stepped back into the box after being brushed back and losing grip of his bat. On the very next pitch, he responded emphatically—driving a double into the left-field corner to score the go-ahead run and put San Diego in front for good.

Tatis finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, continuing his strong season both offensively and defensively. His hustle and energy helped set the tone for a Padres team that has now won five of its last seven games.

Hart, Suarez Seal It on the Mound

Left-hander Kyle Hart (3-2) earned the win with a steady outing, allowing just one run across five innings of work. He scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out three as he kept the Texas offense largely in check.

The Padres’ bullpen then took over, combining for four shutout innings. Robert Suarez closed it out with a flawless ninth, striking out one en route to his 25th save of the season—tied for most in Major League Baseball.

The Rangers were unable to build on their early lead, scoring just once despite collecting eight hits. Texas now sits at 44-45 on the year and continues to seek consistency with both their rotation and lineup.

Rangers Strike First but Fade

Texas got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the second, but the offense stalled from there. Rangers starter Jack Leiter (4-6) worked into the fifth inning but was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits. Though he kept the damage minimal, he lacked the run support to avoid the decision.

Offensively, the Rangers were led by Marcus Semien, who collected two hits, while Adolis García added a double. But Texas went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base.

Veteran right-hander Jacob deGrom (9-2, 2.13 ERA) will take the mound Monday night against the Angels, kicking off a four-game road series in Anaheim. The Rangers will look to regroup behind their ace as they try to stay afloat in the AL West.

Milestone Watch for Machado

Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who remains just two hits shy of 2,000 for his career, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Despite the hitless night, Machado’s presence continues to anchor San Diego’s infield and lineup.

He’ll look to reach the milestone this week, with the Padres returning home to host a key divisional set and welcome back right-hander Yu Darvish, who is set to make his season debut after missing the first half due to elbow inflammation.

Up Next

The Padres remain at home and anticipate a boost with Darvish back in the rotation. Meanwhile, Texas shifts its focus to Anaheim, where it opens the week against a struggling Angels team and looks to climb back over .500 behind their All-Star ace.

Sunday’s performance underscored the Padres’ depth and ability to respond in key moments—traits they’ll need as the postseason race heats up.
