STWF Sports | GRAMBLING, La. | August 15, 2026 — One of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Grambling State football history is returning home.
Head coach Mickey Joseph announced the addition of former Tigers standout Bruce Eugene to the Grambling State coaching staff as quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, bringing a decorated former player back to a program where he built his legacy.
Eugene returns to Grambling with experience spanning college football, high school coaching and scouting, along with a deep understanding of the expectations surrounding the quarterback position at GSU.
“Bruce is a special addition to our coaching staff because he understands what it means to be a quarterback at Grambling State,” Joseph said. “He has been in that position, he has had tremendous success at this level, and he understands the expectations that come with playing quarterback at Grambling.”
For Joseph, Eugene’s familiarity with the program and his background developing quarterbacks could make him an important addition to the Tigers’ offensive staff.
A New Orleans native, Eugene starred at Grambling State from 2001 through 2005 and developed into one of the most productive quarterbacks in Football Championship Subdivision history.
Bruce Eugene’s Impact on Grambling State Football
During his career, Eugene threw for 13,580 yards and 140 touchdowns while earning SWAC Offensive Player of the Year honors twice. He was also a three-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given annually to the top offensive player in the FCS.
Eugene’s success went well beyond individual numbers.
He helped lead Grambling State to four HBCU national championships and four SWAC championships during his career. He also earned SWAC Championship Game MVP honors, Bayou Classic MVP recognition and the Doug Williams Award.
His 2005 senior season remains one of the most remarkable performances by a quarterback in FCS history.
Eugene passed for 4,360 yards and 56 touchdowns while throwing only six interceptions, helping guide Grambling to an 11-1 record and another SWAC championship.
After his playing career, Eugene transitioned into coaching.
He began his collegiate coaching career at Alcorn State in 2011, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under former Grambling State head coach Melvin Spears.
Eugene later built an extensive résumé in New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League, working as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator before becoming head coach at Grand Street Campus in Brooklyn.
His biggest breakthrough there came in 2015.
Eugene guided Grand Street Campus to a 13-0 record and the PSAL Championship Division title, earning New York Jets High School Coach of the Year honors. He also became the first African-American head coach to win the championship in New York City’s highest public-school football division.
More recently, Eugene served at Locust Grove High School in Atlanta from 2024-25, helping the Wildcats capture their first region championship.
He then joined Syracuse University in January 2026 as a scouting assistant before accepting the opportunity to return to Grambling.
Eugene’s ties to the Tigers’ quarterback tradition run especially deep. He played under Grambling legend Doug Williams and later under Spears, giving him direct experience with some of the program’s most influential football figures.
Now, Eugene returns to campus not as the quarterback carrying the offense, but as the coach responsible for helping develop the next generation.
For Grambling State, the hire blends history, credibility and experience.
For Eugene, it represents a homecoming to the program where he became one of the most prolific passers in HBCU and FCS football history.
