Heartbreaking: Promising Dallas Cowboys Defender Marshawn Kneeland Passes Away

STWF | FRISCO, Texas | Nov. 6, 2025 — The Dallas Cowboys and the entire NFL community are mourning the sudden and tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, who passed away early Thursday morning, the team announced in a statement.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the organization said. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Kneeland, just 24 years old, was in the midst of a promising NFL career after being selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University. Known for his relentless motor, leadership, and infectious energy, Kneeland quickly became a respected figure in the Cowboys locker room.

From Western Michigan Star to NFL Promise

A standout during his collegiate career with the Western Michigan Broncos, Kneeland earned a reputation as one of the Mid-American Conference’s most dominant defensive linemen. His blend of athleticism and power made him a sought-after prospect heading into the 2024 draft.

Selected with the 56th overall pick, Kneeland joined a Dallas defensive unit anchored by All-Pro Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. Coaches praised his adaptability and work ethic, often noting that he approached every practice “like it was game day.”

During his rookie campaign, Kneeland appeared in all 18 regular-season games, recording 26 tackles and one sack, along with several quarterback pressures that often went unnoticed on the stat sheet. Teammates described him as a “glue guy” — someone who worked hard, encouraged others, and always brought energy to the building.

“Marshawn had such a bright future,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said in an emotional statement Thursday afternoon. “He was everything you want in a young player — driven, selfless, and a true teammate. This one hurts deeply. We’re all struggling to process it.”

A Locker Room in Mourning

News of Kneeland’s passing spread quickly throughout the NFL world, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from teammates, coaches, and former college peers.

Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons took to social media to share his heartbreak: “This one hits home. Marshawn was more than a teammate — he was family. Rest easy, brother.”

Western Michigan’s official football account also posted a tribute: “Forever a Bronco. Marshawn Kneeland represented this program with class, passion, and heart. Our thoughts are with his family and the Cowboys organization.”

The NFL issued a statement extending condolences to the Cowboys and Kneeland’s family, noting that “Marshawn’s enthusiasm for the game and impact on his teammates will be remembered across the league.”

Remembered for His Character

Beyond the numbers, Kneeland was known for his humility and commitment to giving back. During his first offseason, he volunteered at youth football camps in both Dallas and his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, emphasizing the importance of discipline and education to aspiring athletes.

“Marshawn was always smiling, always uplifting others,” said Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. “He made everyone around him better — not just because of how he played, but because of how he treated people.”

Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, and his family have requested privacy during this time as they grieve.

The Cowboys organization has opened grief counseling services for players, coaches, and staff. The team also plans to honor Kneeland’s memory before their next home game at AT&T Stadium, with players expected to wear helmet decals bearing his No. 91.

A Life and Career Cut Short

As the Cowboys and the broader NFL community process this devastating loss, Marshawn Kneeland’s story will remain one of promise, perseverance, and the deep human bonds that define the sport.

Gone far too soon, he leaves behind a legacy of work ethic, kindness, and passion that extended far beyond the football field.

“Marshawn was the kind of person every coach hopes to have on their team,” McCarthy said. “He gave his all every single day. He’ll never be forgotten.”
