Is LaMelo Ball Next Out? Star Denies Reports as Charlotte Hornets Turmoil Mounts

STWF Sports | CHARLOTTE | Nov. 22, 2025  — As the Charlotte Hornets limp into another disappointing start, the future of their franchise face is once again under the microscope. LaMelo Ball, the former No. 3 overall pick and 2022 All-Star, is battling speculation surrounding his long-term commitment to the organization, even as he publicly insists he’s staying put.

At 4–11, the Hornets haven’t made the playoffs once during Ball’s tenure, and the optimism that accompanied his arrival in 2020 has eroded into chronic inconsistency, injuries, and organizational uncertainty. Ball, now 24 and in his sixth season, has appeared in just 240 of a possible 419 games — barely over 50 percent — a statistic that has fueled questions about his availability and long-term value.

Rumors Heat Up After Yahoo Report

The latest round of speculation erupted when a Yahoo Sports article claimed Ball was “open to a trade.” Ball quickly laughed it off, reposting the report on X with a clown emoji, signaling his irritation with the rumor mill.

But major outlets took notice. As the story spread to Bleacher Report and across social media, league insiders began weighing in. NBA reporter Marc Stein, speaking to talkSPORT, added fuel to the conversation by acknowledging that front offices around the league have already begun discussing potential scenarios.

“There’s already a lot of conversation leaguewide about where things go from here with LaMelo Ball,” Stein said. “But the early signals are that LaMelo has pushed back on the notion that he’s open to a trade.”

Stein emphasized two key points:

  1. The trade season doesn’t formally begin until December 15, when most recently signed players become eligible.

  2. The Hornets insist they do not want to trade Ball.

Ball Responds: “I Love Being Here”

Ball addressed reporters on Friday, doubling down on his loyalty to Charlotte.

“I love being here,” he said. “I ain’t saying nothing. I’m just trying to win, that’s it. That’s what we’re going to keep doing.”

On the Yahoo report, Ball was direct:

“He never heard that come from me, so the source is not from me… just false info. When it gets too big, you gotta say something.”

Ball acknowledged the frustration of seeing rumors spiral into national headlines but reiterated that none of it came from his camp.

Hornets Coach Charlee Lee Reaffirms Commitment

Head coach Charlee Lee also addressed the situation, making it clear he views Ball as essential to the team’s future.

“He’s a huge, huge piece of what we do, offensively and defensively,” Lee said. “He’s absolutely part of our long-term plans.”

Still, the conversation around Ball’s future is unavoidable, especially as Charlotte continues to struggle in the standings.

The Trade Market Question: Would Teams Even Bite?

While fans often speculate about hypothetical blockbuster trades, Stein raised a critical point: the market for Ball might not be as robust as people assume.

Ball signed a $230 million max contract in July 2023, which runs through 2029–30. He still has more than $168 million remaining on the deal, including $37.9 million this season alone.

Any team trading for Ball would need to commit massive financial resources — and accept the risk tied to his injury history and declining efficiency.

“The Hornets would want to see LaMelo Ball with Kon Knueppel, Ryan Kalkbrenner and Brandon Miller,” Stein noted. “But more often than not, they can’t get the four of them playing together.”

Those availability concerns could significantly dampen trade interest.

Uncertain Future, But One Message From Ball

Where does this leave the Hornets and their franchise star?

  • The team doesn’t want to trade him.

  • Ball says he doesn’t want out.

  • Front offices around the league are watching closely anyway.

  • Ball’s durability remains in question.

  • Charlotte’s losing continues to raise bigger existential concerns.

For now, Ball is silent on everything except his commitment.

“I’m just trying to win,” he said. “That’s all I care about.”

Whether the Hornets can give him a situation worth staying for — that’s another story entirely.
