Kelly’s Attorneys Claim LSU is Impeding Job Search

Brian Kelly’s legal dispute with LSU continues to draw attention. According to a report by ESPN, Kelly’s attorneys sent a letter to LSU on November 18, stating that uncertainty surrounding his official termination has made it “nearly impossible” for him to secure a new coaching position.

Under his contract, Kelly is required to act in “good faith and exercise due diligence” in pursuing qualifying employment. With nine openings in power conferences currently available, a new job would reduce LSU’s buyout obligation.

Kelly was initially relieved of his head coaching duties on October 26 by former Athletic Director Scott Woodward. However, LSU contends that Woodward acted without proper authority, as he lacked the Board of Supervisors’ approval to terminate the coach. At last week’s Board meeting, approval was finally granted for new System President Wade Rousse to officially terminate Kelly’s contract.

If LSU fires Kelly without cause, the school could owe the former coach $54 million, making this a high-stakes legal and financial situation for both parties.
