HOUSTON, Texas — Nicholls women’s soccer battled until the final minutes Thursday night, scoring a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw against Houston Christian at Sorrels Field.
The Colonels trailed for much of the second half after Houston Christian broke through in the 68th minute, but Gentry Watrous delivered the answer in the 85th minute to help Nicholls leave Houston with a point in Southland Conference play.
The draw moved Nicholls to 2-3-4 overall and 0-0-1 in the Southland, while Houston Christian moved to 4-3-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
HCU Strikes First
The two teams played through a scoreless opening half despite combining for 16 shots.
Nicholls actually held the advantage in total attempts during the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Houston Christian 9-7, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.
Houston Christian finally broke the deadlock at the 67:38 mark when Isabella Dillow scored her fifth goal of the season. Ella Remy picked up the assist as the Huskies grabbed a 1-0 advantage.
The goal came during a stronger offensive second half for HCU, which produced 10 shots after halftime.
Watrous Delivers Late Equalizer
With time beginning to run out, Nicholls continued pressing for an equalizer.
The Colonels’ persistence paid off at 84:39.
Gentry Watrous scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Alyssa Wheeler, pulling Nicholls even at 1-1 with just over five minutes remaining.
Neither side found another goal in the closing minutes, allowing the Colonels to secure the road draw.
Colonels Generate Plenty of Chances
Nicholls finished with a slight 18-17 advantage in total shots, although Houston Christian placed eight shots on goal compared to three for the Colonels.
Nicholls goalkeeper and defense were tested throughout the match, with the Colonels recording seven saves compared to just two for HCU.
Nicholls also held a narrow edge in corner kicks, 6-5.
The Colonels committed eight fouls compared to six for Houston Christian. Olivia Holmes received a yellow card for Nicholls in the 87th minute, while HCU’s Ella Remy was booked in the first half.
Nicholls Opens Conference Play With a Point
While Nicholls was unable to come away with the road victory, the late goal gave the Colonels an important result to begin Southland Conference action.
After trailing deep into the second half, Nicholls continued attacking and found the breakthrough when Watrous and Wheeler connected for the equalizer.
The Colonels leave Houston at 2-3-4 overall with their first Southland result of the 2026 season — a 1-1 road draw against Houston Christian.
