CFL Announce Major Changes
The CFL has announced a series of rule and field changes set to begin in 2026, aimed at increasing excitement and encouraging more aggressive play.
One of the most notable adjustments is the introduction of a modified rouge. Teams will no longer be awarded a single point on a missed field goal that sails wide of the uprights. This move is designed to reward accuracy and place more emphasis on making field goals rather than simply attempting them.
The playing surface will also be shortened to 100 yards, while keeping its traditional width of 65 yards. The adjustment is expected to create more dynamic offensive opportunities by placing teams closer to scoring territory.
In addition, goalposts will be repositioned to align with the new field dimensions. Officials believe this will not only fit the new layout but also add to the flow of the game.
Together, these changes signal a shift in how the CFL wants its product to be experienced — faster, sharper, and with a greater emphasis on skill and execution.
