Mariners Trade For D-Backs Suarez

The Seattle Mariners have reached an agreement to acquire third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, with the deal currently pending a medical review.

Suarez has been sidelined since Monday after being hit on the right index finger by a pitch. However, medical imaging revealed no fractures, clearing a key hurdle for the trade to proceed.

It is not yet known what the Diamondbacks will receive in return.

The move marks a return to Seattle for Suarez, who played with the Mariners during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before being dealt to Arizona. Now in a contract year, the 34-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the league, drawing significant interest ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. He has been slashing .248/.320/.576 with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs, including a power surge of five home runs in a three-game stretch following the All-Star break. He was named an All-Star for the second time in his career.

While his defensive metrics at third base have dipped in recent seasons, Suarez remains a reliable presence in the field. Arizona has depth at the position, with top prospect Jordan Lawlar waiting in Triple-A, although he’s currently dealing with a minor hamstring strain.

Over the course of his career, Suarez holds a .248 batting average with 312 home runs and 918 RBIs across 1,576 games played with the Tigers, Reds, Mariners, and Diamondbacks.

Seattle, currently second in the AL West behind the Houston Astros with a 57-51 record, has been active in the trade market. This marks the team’s second deal with Arizona in the past week, following the acquisition of first baseman Josh Naylor.
