LOWELL, MA – June 25, 2025 – The Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League (IFL) have officially signed quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, previously of Alabama and Maryland .
Tagovailoa, listed at 6′0″ and 208 lbs, most recently attended NFL rookie minicamps with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals in spring 2024. He then joined the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger‑Cats, spending time on their practice squad before being activated in August. He appeared in eight CFL games, contributing a three-yard rushing touchdown against Toronto and completing one pass for six yards.
Pirates’ President and GM Jawad Yatim emphasized the importance of bolstering the quarterback room as Massachusetts clinches a crucial stretch toward the playoffs:
“Depth is especially important at this time of the season…between Kenji really starting to come into his own…and now adding a player of Taulia’s caliber…we feel comfortable with the position and look forward to improving each day across the roster.”
A standout collegiate athlete, Tagovailoa began his career at Alabama in 2019, backing up his brother Tua and Mac Jones. As a true freshman, he completed 9-of-12 passes for 100 yards and one touchdownmas. He transferred to Maryland ahead of the 2020 season, and by 2021 emerged as a star, setting multiple school records—including single-season passing yards (3,860), completions (328), touchdown passes (26), and recording seven 300-yard games. His performance in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl earned him MVP honors after passing for 265 yards and two scores, plus a rushing TD .
By the conclusion of his collegiate tenure, Tagovailoa amassed a Big Ten record 11,256 career passing yards. In 2023 alone, he threw for 3,377 yards and 25 touchdowns, topping the conference in completions, passing yards, TDs, and yards per game. Also recognized twice as a Second‑Team All‑Big Ten player, he won the Polynesian Offensive Player of the Year award and was named an All‑Big Ten Academic selection.
