Michigan Fires Moore For Inappropriate Relationship

Sherrone Moore has been dismissed as Michigan’s head coach. Moore took over the program in 2024 following Jim Harbaugh’s departure and compiled a 16–8 record during his tenure.

Moore joined the Michigan staff in 2018 as tight ends coach and was elevated to co-offensive coordinator in 2021. He became the program’s sole offensive coordinator in 2023 and served as acting head coach during multiple suspensions for Harbaugh stemming from the Big Ten sign-stealing investigation. Michigan went 3–0 under Moore during Harbaugh’s initial suspension and added another win during a separate suspension.

When Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024, Michigan promoted Moore to full-time head coach. The Wolverines finished 8–5 in his first season, highlighted by a win over Ohio State in “The Game” and a bowl victory over Alabama.

Michigan built further momentum by securing Five Star Plus+ quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top overall recruit, who became the Wolverines’ starting quarterback in 2025. Michigan posted a 9–3 record that season, including a 6–2 mark in Big Ten play.

Moore, however, missed two games in 2025 due to a suspension connected to the ongoing sign-stealing investigation. He also received a two-year show-cause penalty. During his absence, Biff Poggi served as acting head coach and guided the Wolverines to wins over Central Michigan and Nebraska.

Michigan entered the regular-season finale against Ohio State on a five-game winning streak and still in contention for a Big Ten Championship berth depending on tiebreakers. Ohio State won 27–9 in Ann Arbor in what became the most-watched game of the 2025 season.

Before arriving at Michigan, Moore played offensive line at Oklahoma and began his coaching career at Louisville in 2009. He became Louisville’s tight ends coach in 2012, moved to Central Michigan in 2014, and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2017.

Michigan is now preparing for the Citrus Bowl after finishing the 2025 regular season 9–3. The Wolverines will face Texas on December 31.
