MiLB Game Recap: Frisco Shuts Out Hooks Behind Stellar Staff Performance, Takes Game Two of Series

FRISCO, Texas (July 19, 2025) — The Frisco RoughRiders rode dominant pitching and timely offense to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Saturday night at Riders Field. The win evened the three-game set between the two Texas League South Division foes and gave Frisco (8-12, 46-42) its fourth shutout of the season.

Led by a dazzling Double-A debut from right-hander Jose Corniell, the RoughRiders’ pitching staff held Corpus Christi (8-12, 30-58) in check from start to finish. Corniell, returning from injury, tossed two no-hit innings to open the game, setting the tone for the bullpen crew that followed. David Davalillo, Daniel Missaki, and Avery Weems combined for seven shutout frames to secure the clean sheet.

Walcott’s Blast Sparks Offense

The Riders broke through offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a scoreless start from both sides, Sebastian Walcott delivered the game’s defining blow — a two-run home run to left-center field that gave Frisco a 2-0 lead. The 19-year-old phenom continues to impress in his first full Texas League season, reaching double digits in home runs while remaining a terror on the basepaths.

Walcott’s homer was his 10th of the season and added to an already historic campaign. With 22 stolen bases, he is now just eight swipes shy of becoming the first teenager in the Texas League to record a 10+ HR, 30+ SB season since Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar did it in 1987.

Ortiz Adds Insurance

In the sixth, Abimelec Ortiz added to the Riders’ lead with a sharp RBI single, driving in the third and final run of the night. Ortiz’s bat remained hot after a two-hit, two-RBI outing the previous night and continues to pace the Frisco lineup with his consistency in the middle of the order.

The RBI marked Ortiz’s 46th of the season, and his contributions have been instrumental in Frisco’s offensive identity during the second half of the season.

Pitching Staff Delivers Statement

After Corniell’s two clean innings, Davalillo (1-1) took over and delivered another gem in long relief. The right-hander allowed just two hits across 4.2 shutout innings, striking out four en route to his first win of the season.

Since returning from the development list on July 4, Davalillo has been one of the most effective pitchers in the Texas League, retiring 38 of his last 48 batters faced. In three appearances, including two starts, he holds a 0.68 ERA, ranking him third in the league over that stretch.

Daniel Missaki added stability out of the pen with a scoreless frame before Avery Weems took the ball in the ninth. After allowing a runner into scoring position, Weems buckled down and struck out the next three batters to secure his second save of the season in dominant fashion.

Corpus Christi’s Struggles Continue

The Hooks struggled to generate any offense against Frisco’s pitching staff, managing just four hits and going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Bryce Mayer (1-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up three earned runs over 4.1 innings.

With the loss, Corpus Christi has now dropped two of its last three games and sits in last place in the South Division.

Up Next

Frisco and Corpus Christi will battle for the series win in a rubber match Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. at Riders Field. While Frisco has yet to announce a starting pitcher, the Hooks will send right-hander Jackson Nezuh (1-5, 4.98 ERA) to the mound.

The Riders will look to ride the momentum of Saturday’s shutout performance as they seek to climb back to .500 and gain ground in a tightly contested second-half race.
