MiLB Game Recap: Late Collapse Sinks RoughRiders in Series Finale Against Hooks

FRISCO, Texas (July 20, 2025) — A wild ninth inning unraveled what was shaping up to be a promising night for the Frisco RoughRiders, as they fell 11-6 to the Corpus Christi Hooks in the series finale Sunday at Riders Field. The defeat spoiled a late-game lead and dropped Frisco (8-13, 46-43) to fifth place in the Texas League South second-half standings.

Leading 5-3 entering the ninth, the RoughRiders saw their bullpen give up eight runs in a stunning collapse, allowing Corpus Christi (9-12, 31-58) to steal the rubber match and leave Frisco with their second series win of the season at Riders Field.

Clarke, Ferreras Power Early Hooks Offense

Corpus Christi opened the scoring in the first inning when Wes Clarke crushed a two-run homer to left field, giving the Hooks an early 2-0 edge. The Hooks added another blast in the fourth inning — this time from Pascanel Ferreras, who launched a solo home run to reclaim the lead at 3-2 after Frisco had momentarily tied the game.

Ferreras finished the night with two hits and two RBI, serving as one of five Hooks players with multi-hit performances.

Walcott Shines Again

Sebastian Walcott continued his standout series, producing on both sides of the ball for Frisco. In the third inning, he ripped a two-run triple into the right-center gap to even the game at 2-2. In the sixth, he singled, stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch to knot things at 3-3.

Walcott capped off a red-hot weekend by hitting .462 (6-for-13) in the series, tying for the league lead with five RBI over that stretch.

Zavala, Ortiz Spark Late Surge

In the eighth inning, Frisco grabbed its first lead of the night when Aaron Zavala launched a solo home run to right, making it 4-3. Moments later, Abimelec Ortiz extended the lead with an RBI groundout, bringing home the Riders’ fifth run.

Ortiz, who has been scorching at the plate of late, now leads the Texas League with a 1.357 OPS over his last six games, cementing his place as one of the most dangerous bats in the circuit.

Ninth-Inning Nightmare

Frisco was just three outs away from securing the series when the ninth inning quickly spiraled out of control.

The Hooks loaded the bases before Bryce Willits drove in a run on a fielding error to cut the deficit to one. Clarke then drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5. Corpus kept applying pressure as Orlando Martinez punched a two-run single through the right side, and Zach Cole followed with a two-run triple to make it 9-5. RBI singles from Trevor Austin and Ferreras pushed the Hooks’ run total to 11 before the RoughRiders could stop the bleeding.

Gavin Collyer (4-5) was charged with the loss and a blown save after surrendering four earned runs without recording an out in the ninth.

Late Rally Falls Short

In the bottom of the ninth, Frisco loaded the bases and managed to plate one more run via a Josh Hatcher walk, trimming the deficit to 11-6. However, with the tying run on deck, Anderson Bido induced a game-ending groundout to secure his second save and preserve the win for Alimber Santa (3-1), who tossed a scoreless eighth to earn the victory.

Up Next

Frisco now heads out on the road for a six-game set against the Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota Twins affiliate) beginning Tuesday, July 22 at Equity Bank Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., and fans can catch all the action live on the H-E-B Riders Baseball Network at RidersBaseball.com/Broadcast.

Despite the tough loss, Frisco remains in the thick of the playoff hunt as they turn the page toward a critical road trip in the second half of the Texas League season.
