STWF Sports | FRISCO, Texas | April 8, 2026 — After four dominant games to open the 2026 season, the Frisco RoughRiders were finally slowed Wednesday night, falling 5-4 to the Midland RockHounds at Riders Field in a tightly contested matchup that snapped their unbeaten start.
Frisco (4-1) faced an early deficit it could not fully overcome, despite a late push fueled by timely hitting and continued excellence from its bullpen.
Frisco RoughRiders Fight to Maintain Momentum
Early Power Surge Puts Riders Behind
The tone of the game was set quickly, as Midland (4-1) capitalized on its early opportunities with power at the plate.
Facing RoughRiders starter Blake Townsend in his Frisco debut, the RockHounds struck for five runs across the first two innings—all coming via the long ball. Tommy White opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Midland added three more in the second.
Brayan Buelvas and Cameron Leary connected on back-to-back home runs to begin the frame, and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer added another with two outs, pushing the RockHounds’ lead to 5-0.
For a Frisco pitching staff that had not allowed an extra-base hit through its first four games, the sudden surge of home runs marked a sharp departure from its early-season dominance.
Townsend (0-1) settled in after the early damage but was ultimately tagged with the loss in his first outing of the year.
Bullpen Keeps Game Within Reach
Once again, the RoughRiders’ bullpen provided stability and gave the offense an opportunity to claw back into the game.
Relievers Bryan Magdaleno, Jonathan Brand and Ricardo Velez combined for scoreless innings, continuing a remarkable early-season run for the unit. Through five games, the bullpen lowered its ERA to a Minor League-leading 0.40, reinforcing its role as one of the team’s strongest assets.
Their efforts halted Midland’s momentum and shifted the focus back to Frisco’s lineup.
Offense Mounts Late Rally
The RoughRiders began chipping away at the deficit in the fourth inning when Tucker Mitchell delivered an RBI double, bringing home Julian Brock for Frisco’s first run of the night.
The offense continued to apply pressure in the later innings. Dylan Dreiling and Brock each drove in runs in the seventh, cutting the lead to 5-3 and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Dreiling, who recorded three hits on the night, was a consistent presence at the plate, while Brock contributed both offensively and defensively, finishing with two hits and throwing out three attempted base stealers.
Ninth-Inning Drama
Frisco’s comeback bid reached its peak in the ninth inning.
Keyber Rodriguez crossed the plate on a wild pitch from Midland reliever Shohei Tomioka, trimming the deficit to one run and bringing the tying run into scoring position. With momentum building, the RoughRiders had a chance to complete the rally.
However, John Taylor’s popout ended the threat, leaving the tying run stranded at third base and sealing Midland’s victory.
James Gonzalez (1-0) earned the win in relief for the RockHounds, while Tomioka recorded his second save of the season.
Streak Ends, Lessons Begin
The loss marked the end of Frisco’s perfect start and left the Texas League without an undefeated team. It also represented the first time this season the RoughRiders allowed extra-base hits, highlighting the challenge of sustaining early dominance over a long season.
Despite the setback, Frisco’s overall performance offered encouraging signs. The bullpen remained dominant, and the offense demonstrated resilience by nearly erasing a five-run deficit.
Looking Ahead
The RoughRiders will have little time to dwell on the loss as they return to Riders Field on Thursday night for the next game of the series. Midland is scheduled to send left-hander Jamie Arnold to the mound, while Frisco has yet to announce its starter.
With promotions such as Bark in the Park and Thirsty Thursday on tap, the focus will shift quickly to bouncing back and regaining momentum.
For Frisco, the opening loss of the season serves as both a reality check and an opportunity—one that will test the team’s ability to respond and continue building on an otherwise strong start to 2026.
