MiLB Game Recap: RoughRiders Dominate Missions 12-3 with Explosive Offense

Frisco, TX (July 31, 2025) – The Frisco RoughRiders (11-19, 49-49) powered past the San Antonio Missions (13-17, 52-47) with a dominant 12-3 victory on Thursday night at Riders Field. Frisco’s offense exploded early, putting up 12 runs across the second and third innings to take control of the game and secure the series lead.

Early Explosion: Seven Runs in the Second

The RoughRiders wasted no time getting on the board. After a quiet first inning, they came alive in the bottom of the second. Aaron Zavala, Tucker Mitchell, and Jax Biggers each delivered RBI singles to put Frisco on top, 3-0. But the onslaught didn’t stop there. Cam Cauley followed up with an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-0. The big blow came from Abimelec Ortiz, who crushed a three-run homer, extending the RoughRiders’ lead to 7-0 and putting San Antonio in a deep hole early.

More Runs in the Third: Zavala and Ortiz Shine Again

Frisco continued to pour it on in the third inning. Zavala roped an RBI triple, bringing the lead to 8-0, and Keith Jones II, Biggers, Cauley, and Ortiz all contributed with RBI doubles, pushing the score to a commanding 12-0. The RoughRiders went 10-for-16 with runners in scoring position, showing impressive execution when it mattered most.

Missions Respond but Can’t Climb Back

San Antonio didn’t go quietly, loading the bases in the top of the fifth. Wyatt Hoffman hit into a double play, allowing Marcos Castañon to score and trim the lead to 12-1. The Missions added two more runs in the top of the sixth when Hoffman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Devin Ortiz grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice. That made it 12-3, but it was as close as San Antonio would get, as Frisco’s offense and pitching held firm the rest of the way.

Pitching Breakdown: Lopez and Kelley Shine

Frisco’s pitching staff played a key role in keeping the Missions’ offense in check. Starting pitcher Leandro Lopez had a strong outing, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven over five innings. Lopez was in control for much of the game, and his solid performance helped Frisco build a comfortable lead.

Reliever Jackson Kelley (1-1) entered in the sixth and delivered two scoreless frames, earning the win. Kelley struck out four and showed great poise in the later innings. On the other side, San Antonio starter Victor Lizarraga (2-8) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over just 3.2 innings. Lizarraga struggled to keep the RoughRiders off the scoreboard, and the Missions’ bullpen didn’t fare much better.

Key Performances: Ortiz Continues Power Surge

Abimelec Ortiz continued his stellar season with another outstanding performance, including a three-run homer in the second inning. Ortiz, who ranks second in Minor League Baseball in batting average (.440) since July 11, also contributed an RBI double in the third. His hot streak at the plate has been a bright spot for the RoughRiders throughout the season.

Historic Offensive Outburst

Frisco’s 12 runs through the first three innings matched a franchise record for the most runs scored in the first three innings of a game. The RoughRiders previously accomplished the feat on May 31, 2017, against Northwest Arkansas, and July 4, 2009, against Springfield. This offensive explosion was a testament to the team’s ability to capitalize on opportunities and execute with runners in scoring position.

Looking Ahead: Game Four of the Series

The RoughRiders will look to extend their lead in the series when they face the San Antonio Missions again on Friday, August 1, at 7:05 p.m. CT from Riders Field. Frisco will turn to right-hander David Davalillo (1-2, 2.45) to start the game, while the Missions will counter with left-hander Jagger Haynes (3-2, 4.02).

Promotions and Upcoming Events

Friday night’s game will feature the “Kickoff to Football Night,” presented by Ewing Buick GMC, and “Fireworks Friday.” Fans can look forward to a fun-filled evening of baseball and entertainment as the RoughRiders aim to maintain their momentum and extend their series lead.
