STWF Sports | CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas | April 2, 2026 — Precision at the plate and dominance on the mound set the tone for the Frisco RoughRiders’ 2026 campaign, as they opened the season with a commanding 5-1 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Thursday night at Whataburger Field.
Frisco wasted no time establishing its offensive rhythm, tallying 10 hits through the first five innings—all singles—in a performance that emphasized consistency over flash. The approach proved effective, keeping constant pressure on Corpus Christi pitching while allowing the RoughRiders to methodically build an early lead.
Designated hitter Keith Jones II delivered the game’s first breakthrough in the second inning. With runners in scoring position, Jones lined a two-RBI single through the left side, giving Frisco a 2-0 advantage and igniting a lineup that would produce contributions from top to bottom.
Two innings later, third baseman Frainyer Chavez extended the margin with a two-run single of his own. The hit capped another patient offensive sequence and pushed the lead to 4-0, reinforcing the RoughRiders’ ability to capitalize on traffic on the basepaths.
While the offense set the pace, Frisco’s pitching staff ensured there would be no early momentum swing. Right-hander Leandro Lopez, making his Opening Day start, was electric in his season debut. The Rangers’ prospect carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning, ultimately finishing with 4.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
Lopez showcased a controlled arsenal and command of the strike zone, consistently keeping Hooks hitters off balance. His outing not only neutralized Corpus Christi’s lineup but also provided a glimpse of the high ceiling within Frisco’s rotation.
With two outs in the fifth, Lopez was lifted in favor of reliever Zach Bryant. Corpus Christi managed its only run of the night shortly after, capitalizing on a two-out rally that ended with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to outfielder Lucas Spence. Despite the brief disruption, the RoughRiders’ bullpen quickly regained control.
Ryan Lobus played a pivotal role in stabilizing the game, earning the win after delivering two scoreless innings in relief. In total, five Frisco pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts while allowing just three hits, underscoring a dominant collective effort on the mound.
Frisco added an insurance run in the seventh inning when John Taylor drove in a run with a groundout, extending the lead to 5-1 and effectively putting the game out of reach.
The RoughRiders’ offensive depth was on full display throughout the night. All nine starters recorded at least one hit, a testament to the lineup’s balance and production. Taylor, Jones, Orlando Martinez and Tucker Mitchell each registered multi-hit performances, with Mitchell leading the way with three hits and a walk in a standout showing.
The victory continues a recent trend of success for Frisco against Corpus Christi. After edging the Hooks 12-11 in the 2025 season series, the RoughRiders claimed the first matchup of 2026 with authority.
For a team still fueled by last season’s near-miss postseason bid, Thursday’s performance offered an encouraging start. The RoughRiders combined disciplined hitting, efficient pitching and defensive composure—elements that were present throughout their strong 2025 campaign but now appear sharper with experience.
Frisco will look to build on its Opening Day momentum when the series continues Friday night. Left-hander Dylan MacLean is scheduled to take the mound for the RoughRiders against Corpus Christi right-hander Brandon McPherson, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Whataburger Field.
If Thursday’s opener is any indication, the RoughRiders are not just starting a new season—they are setting a standard.
