MiLB Game Recap: Sweep Complete as Frisco RoughRiders Shut Out Hooks to Finish Perfect 3-0 Start

STWF Sports | CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas | April 4, 2026  — In a game defined by patience, pitching and perseverance, the Frisco RoughRiders capped a dominant opening series with a 1-0 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Saturday night at a rain-soaked Whataburger Field.

The win secured a three-game sweep for Frisco (3-0) and marked the franchise’s first 3-0 start in five seasons, completing a statement-opening weekend built on offensive depth and elite pitching.

Davalillo Sets the Standard

Right-hander David Davalillo, the Texas Rangers’ 2025 Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year, delivered a commanding performance in his season debut. Davalillo worked 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits—all singles—while striking out seven and issuing two walks.

His outing continued a trend of dominant starting pitching for the RoughRiders, who have relied heavily on their rotation through the first three games of the season. Davalillo consistently attacked the strike zone and limited hard contact, keeping Corpus Christi’s lineup from generating any sustained momentum.

Pitching Duel Early

Despite Frisco’s offensive success earlier in the series, Saturday’s finale unfolded as a tightly contested pitcher’s duel.

Corpus Christi starter Brett Gillis matched Davalillo early, tossing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. After surrendering 26 hits and 15 runs over the first two games, the Hooks (0-3) showed improved command on the mound, holding the RoughRiders off the scoreboard through the first seven innings.

Both teams struggled to generate scoring opportunities, with timely pitching and defensive execution keeping the game locked in a scoreless tie deep into the night.

Breakthrough in the Eighth

The decisive moment came in the eighth inning, when Frisco finally broke through.

Frainyer Chavez and Dylan Dreiling each reached base with singles, setting the stage for Keyber Rodriguez, who delivered a clutch RBI single through the right side. The hit—Rodriguez’s third of the night—scored Chavez and gave the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead.

Frisco threatened to extend the advantage after loading the bases with no outs in the inning, but Corpus Christi’s bullpen limited the damage, escaping further trouble and keeping the deficit within reach.

Bullpen Slams the Door

With a slim lead in hand, the RoughRiders’ bullpen once again rose to the occasion.

Ricardo Velez earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief, maintaining control through the eighth and into the ninth. Closer Janser Lara then secured the victory, recording his first save of the season with a clean ninth inning.

The combined effort from Frisco’s pitching staff has been a defining storyline of the series. Over three games, the RoughRiders allowed just three total runs—the fewest in franchise history through the first three games of a season.

Even more impressively, Frisco has yet to allow an extra-base hit in 2026, underscoring the staff’s ability to limit damage and control opposing offenses.

Balanced Contributions Continue

Offensively, the RoughRiders once again leaned on timely hitting rather than volume scoring. Rodriguez and Chavez led the way, combining for five of Frisco’s eight hits in the game.

Tucker Mitchell continued his strong start, recording his sixth hit through the first three games to tie a franchise record for early-season production.

While the offense did not match the explosive output of the previous two games, the ability to execute in key moments proved just as valuable.

Momentum Heading Home

The sweep reinforces Frisco’s status as an early-season contender in the Texas League. Through three games, the RoughRiders have displayed a complete identity—powerful offense, disciplined at-bats and a pitching staff capable of controlling games.

Following the road trip, Frisco will return home after two off days to open a series against the Midland RockHounds on Tuesday night. Left-hander Josh Trentadue is scheduled to make his first start of the season in the home opener.

For the RoughRiders, the opening series offered more than just three wins. It provided a blueprint for success—one built on consistency, execution and resilience.

In Corpus Christi, Frisco didn’t just win. It set a tone for what could be a defining season
