MiLB Recap: Frisco RoughRiders Ride Eight-Run Eighth to 8-3 Win Over Hooks

STWF Sports | CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas | July 8, 2026 — The Frisco RoughRiders turned a close game into a decisive victory Wednesday night, erupting for seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Corpus Christi Hooks 8-3 at Whataburger Field.

The Impact of the Frisco RoughRiders’ Performance

Frisco improved to 8-6 in the second half and 47-35 overall, while Corpus Christi fell to 7-7 and 39-44. The win also pushed the RoughRiders’ record at Whataburger Field this season to 8-3.

The game remained tight for most of the evening before Frisco’s offense broke through against the Corpus Christi bullpen.

The Hooks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Austin reached base and came around to score when Will Bush delivered an RBI double against Frisco starter Blake Townsend, giving Corpus Christi an early 1-0 lead.

Townsend settled in after the opening inning and produced a career-best strikeout performance. The left-hander recorded eight strikeouts over 4.2 innings, keeping the RoughRiders within striking distance despite the early deficit.

Frisco responded in the top of the second when Malcolm Moore launched a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Moore’s swing provided the RoughRiders with their first breakthrough against the Hooks’ pitching staff and briefly reset the contest.

Corpus Christi regained the lead in the fifth inning and added another run in the sixth, building a 3-1 advantage. The Hooks appeared positioned to even the series after limiting Frisco to one run through the first seven innings.

That changed dramatically in the eighth.

Rafe Perich opened the inning with an opposite-field home run to right, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The blast was Perich’s eighth home run since reaching Double-A and his 19th overall this season between Frisco and High-A Hub City.

Perich’s home run once again came in a crucial situation. The RoughRiders are now 8-0 in games in which he has homered, underscoring his growing reputation as one of the organization’s most dependable power threats.

The inning continued to unravel for Corpus Christi after Perich’s homer. Julian Brock tied the game with an RBI single, bringing the RoughRiders even at 3-3 and shifting the momentum fully toward the visitors.

Marcus Lee Sang followed with the decisive hit, driving in two runs with a base hit to give Frisco its first lead of the night at 5-3.

Max Wagner then delivered the inning’s biggest blow. The infielder crushed a three-run home run, extending the lead to 8-3 and completing a seven-run outburst that transformed the game in a matter of minutes.

The RoughRiders sent multiple hitters to the plate during the rally and combined power with timely situational hitting. Three different players drove in runs during the inning, while Perich and Wagner supplied the home runs that bookended the surge.

Bryan Magdaleno earned the victory after contributing a scoreless inning out of the Frisco bullpen. He improved to 2-1, while Corpus Christi reliever Jack Dashwood took the loss and fell to 0-1.

Frisco’s pitching staff also continued an impressive strikeout run. One night after recording 18 strikeouts against the Hooks, the RoughRiders added 15 more Wednesday.

Frisco pitchers have now collected 106 strikeouts over their past eight games, the highest total in Minor League Baseball during that span. The staff’s ability to miss bats has become one of the club’s defining strengths, complementing an offense capable of changing games with one explosive inning.

The RoughRiders have taken the first two games of the six-game series and will look to maintain their momentum as the matchup continues at Whataburger Field.
