STWF Sports | CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas | May 1, 2026 — The Frisco RoughRiders saw their recent offensive momentum stall Friday night, falling 9-4 to the Corpus Christi Hooks at Whataburger Field.
The Rise of the Frisco RoughRiders in Minor League Baseball
The loss dropped Frisco to 13-12 on the season and marked a shift from the high-powered form that had defined much of the club’s recent stretch. For the first time in six games, the RoughRiders were unable to strike in the opening inning — a departure from a trend that had fueled their success.
Corpus Christi (12-13) capitalized quickly. After a quiet first inning, the Hooks broke through in the second, tagging Frisco starter Leandro Lopez for three runs to seize early control. The right-hander, who entered the contest looking to stabilize the rotation, struggled to contain a lineup that consistently applied pressure.
Frisco responded in the third inning with a bright spot from newcomer Max Wagner. The infielder launched a solo home run, his second in as many games to begin his RoughRiders career, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and providing a brief spark for the offense.
However, the momentum proved short-lived.
Corpus Christi widened the gap in the middle innings, scoring four runs in the fourth and adding another in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-1. The Hooks’ ability to string together quality at-bats and capitalize on opportunities exposed Frisco’s pitching depth and forced the RoughRiders into a defensive posture.
Despite the deficit, Frisco continued to show flashes of offensive capability. In the sixth inning, Orlando Martinez delivered a solo home run to trim the margin to 8-2. The outfielder has been one of the team’s most consistent performers throughout the series, continuing a strong run at the plate.
Corpus Christi added another run in the seventh to push the lead to 9-2, effectively putting the game out of reach. Frisco managed to tack on late runs, but the early damage proved too significant to overcome.
Out of the bullpen, Janser Lara provided a positive note, delivering a clean 1-2-3 inning in the eighth. His efficient outing offered a glimpse of stability as the RoughRiders look to regroup heading into the latter stages of the series.
For Corpus Christi, reliever Trey McLoughlin earned the win after tossing 2.1 effective innings, helping to secure the victory and maintain the Hooks’ control of the game.
While the result was disappointing for Frisco, the team’s offensive production over the course of the season remains noteworthy. Through 25 games, the RoughRiders have hit 35 home runs — the most through that span in recorded franchise history since 2005 — underscoring the lineup’s power potential.
Martinez continued to be a key contributor, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances. Through the first four games of the series, he has gone 8-for-16 with five doubles, a home run, and six RBIs, solidifying his role as a central figure in the offense.
The loss highlights an area of focus for the RoughRiders: consistency across all phases of the game. While the offense has demonstrated the ability to produce in bursts, maintaining that production — and pairing it with steady pitching — will be essential moving forward.
Frisco will look to bounce back in game five of the series as left-hander Dylan MacLean takes the mound against Corpus Christi’s Brett Gillis. With the series still in reach, the RoughRiders have an opportunity to respond and reestablish the rhythm that carried them earlier in the week.
As the road trip continues, the challenge for Frisco is clear — turn potential into sustained performance and rediscover the balance that has made them one of the more dynamic teams in the Texas League.
