MLB Game Recap: deGrom Dazzles as Rangers Power Past A’s 6-2 in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – July 23, 2025

On a warm summer night in North Texas, the Texas Rangers leaned on dominant pitching and timely power to secure a 6-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday at Globe Life Field. Jacob deGrom, in his first outing since before the All-Star break, looked every bit like the ace Rangers fans hoped for when he arrived in Arlington.

The two-time Cy Young winner fanned nine over six strong innings, allowing just one blemish—a leadoff home run to Oakland’s Lawrence Butler. That solo shot was quickly erased from memory as deGrom settled into vintage form, retiring 10 consecutive batters at one point and cruising through the A’s lineup with a masterclass in command and velocity.

“I felt fresh and under control,” said deGrom, who improved to 10-2 on the season. “I wanted to attack the zone and let the defense do their job. After that first batter, I locked back in.”

DeGrom threw 86 pitches—60 for strikes—and allowed just three hits on the night, showing no signs of rust after opting out of pitching in last week’s Midsummer Classic.

Power Surge Seals the Deal

The A’s struck first with Butler’s 14th home run of the season, a leadoff blast that briefly stunned the home crowd. But Texas answered in the fourth inning when Adolis García launched a solo home run, tying the score at one and providing the spark the Rangers needed.

An inning later, Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien delivered a momentum-shifting moment, slicing a 364-foot homer off the left-field foul pole. Initially ruled in play, the umpires overturned the call after a replay review confirmed the ball had just stayed fair. The home run gave Texas a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish.

Corey Seager, continuing his red-hot stretch at the plate, delivered the decisive blow in the seventh inning—a three-run shot to right-center that capped off a four-run frame. Seager finished 2-for-4 with a walk and now boasts a 23-game on-base streak.

“Corey’s been huge for us,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said postgame. “Every time he steps into the box, you feel like something good is going to happen. He’s setting the tone for this entire lineup.”

Oakland’s Early Hope Fades

For the A’s, it was a case of missed opportunity. Lawrence Butler’s early home run provided a glimpse of promise, but Oakland’s offense stalled immediately after. The Athletics recorded just three hits on the night, none after the fourth inning.

Sean Newcomb (2-5) took the loss after surrendering Semien’s go-ahead homer in the sixth. Starter J.T. Ginn pitched effectively over five innings, allowing only one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts, but the Oakland bullpen couldn’t hold the line.

The loss marks Oakland’s third straight and continues a trend of offensive inconsistency that has plagued them all season.

Stat Leaders and Notes

  • Jacob deGrom (TEX): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 0 BB

  • Corey Seager (TEX): 2-for-4, HR (3 RBI), BB

  • Marcus Semien (TEX): 1-for-4, HR, RBI

Seager’s homer was his 18th of the year and his 23-game on-base streak is now tied for the longest active run in the majors. Meanwhile, García’s solo blast was his 20th, giving Texas a trio of 20+ home run hitters as the offense continues to heat up post-All-Star break.

Up Next

The Rangers and Athletics resume their series on Wednesday night, with Texas looking to inch back above .500 for good. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT. The Rangers are expected to send right-hander Dane Dunning to the mound, while the A’s counter with rookie Joey Estes.

With deGrom back in the fold and the offense clicking, the Rangers are hoping this performance is a sign of things to come in the second half.
