MLB Game Recap: Jung’s Walk-Off Blast Lifts Rangers Past Yankees 8-5 in Extras

ARLINGTON, Texas (August 4, 2025) The Texas Rangers delivered late-inning drama once again, as Josh Jung blasted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift Texas to an 8-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday night at Globe Life Field. The win marked the Rangers’ seventh consecutive home victory and further cemented their reputation as one of the league’s toughest teams to beat in Arlington.

Jung, who has developed a reputation for clutch hitting, came through in the biggest moment of the night. With two outs and two on — after Wyatt Langford was intentionally walked — the third baseman drove a 401-foot shot into left-center off reliever Jake Bird (4-2) for his 11th home run of the season.

“I just tried to stay calm and look for a good pitch,” Jung said. “When you’ve got guys on base and the crowd behind you, the adrenaline kicks in. I’m glad I could come through for the team.”

Pederson’s Pinch-Hit Heroics

The Rangers were down to their final outs before veteran Joc Pederson, hitting just .132 on the season, tied the game in the ninth. Pinch-hitting against Yankees closer Devin Williams, Pederson crushed a 408-foot homer to right field, his first long ball since May 17.

Pederson has played sparingly since returning from a two-month absence due to a fractured right hand. His timely blast was a welcome sign for a Rangers team looking for production from its bench.

“That was a huge moment for Joc,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s been grinding to get back, and to deliver like that shows the kind of veteran presence he brings.”

Goldschmidt Sets Tone Early

The Yankees looked poised to snap their losing skid early when Paul Goldschmidt led off the game with a home run, his ninth of the season. Goldschmidt went on to score three times, keeping New York’s offense afloat.

The Yankees added to their lead in the fourth when Giancarlo Stanton launched a two-run shot, his 10th homer in 32 games since returning from an elbow injury. That gave New York a 5-4 edge, but the bullpen couldn’t hold on late.

Fried Denied Win

All-Star left-hander Max Fried, looking for a major league-best 13th win, battled through five innings but left with a 5-4 lead that didn’t hold. He threw 105 pitches, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out seven.

Fried’s struggles came in the second inning, when six consecutive Rangers reached base. An errant pickoff throw also allowed a run, compounding the trouble. Despite the rocky outing, Fried kept the Yankees in front before the Rangers rallied late.

Coulombe Closes It Out

The Rangers turned to newly acquired reliever Danny Coulombe (2-0) in the 10th inning, and he delivered in just his third appearance with the club since arriving from Minnesota at the trade deadline. After issuing a walk, Coulombe started an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play on a comebacker from Austin Wells, securing his first victory as a Ranger.

“That double play was huge,” Bochy said. “Danny kept his composure, and that’s what we brought him here to do.”

Key Numbers

  • 12 of 15: The Rangers have now won 12 of their last 15 home games, continuing a dominant stretch in Arlington.

  • 9: Goldschmidt’s leadoff blast was the Yankees’ ninth leadoff homer this season, second only to the Dodgers (11).

  • 7: The win gave Texas its seventh consecutive home victory, tying a season high.

Looking Ahead

The Yankees, who have now dropped four straight games and were just swept in Miami, are anxiously awaiting the return of Aaron Judge from the injured list. His comeback could not come at a more crucial time as New York looks to keep pace in the American League playoff race.

Texas, meanwhile, continues to ride a hot streak at Globe Life Field. With their offense heating up and their bullpen fortified by recent additions, the Rangers appear ready to make a push down the stretch.

Final Score: Rangers 8, Yankees 5 (10 innings)
