MLS Game Preview: FC Dallas at St. Louis CITY SC — September 6

FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 6, 2025)FC Dallas heads back on the road Saturday night to face St. Louis CITY SC at Energizer Park, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. CT. The matchup presents Dallas an opportunity to reclaim early-season road form and strengthen its push toward playoff contention against one of the Western Conference’s most energized expansion clubs.

Dallas’ Road Resilience

FC Dallas has already etched its name into the MLS record book in 2025 for road performance. The club began the year unbeaten in its first six away matches from Feb. 22 to May 3, the longest such streak to start a campaign in franchise history. During that stretch, Dallas earned 12 points, joining the Philadelphia Union (2024) and New York Red Bulls (2022) as the only teams in the last decade to remain unbeaten through six road games.

The highlight of that run came on April 27, when Dallas stunned Inter Miami with a comeback from two goals down to win 3-2. It marked only the second time this year the team erased a two-goal deficit and the first such road victory for the club since 2011. That resilience showcased the mentality instilled by head coach Nico Estévez, who has emphasized structure and discipline away from Toyota Stadium.

Long Miles, Mixed Results

The club’s unbeaten road streak, however, was tested during a grueling May travel stretch. Dallas logged 8,339 miles across three matches — the longest consecutive road trip of the season — and finished 0-2-1 during that span. In total, from April to May, the team traveled 15,543 miles, underscoring the toll of travel in a compressed MLS calendar.

Since then, Dallas has attempted to strike a balance between managing fatigue and rediscovering consistency. Returning to form against St. Louis would provide both a boost in the standings and renewed confidence ahead of the home stretch.

The Opponent: St. Louis CITY SC

Now in its second MLS campaign, St. Louis CITY SC has quickly built a reputation as one of the league’s most difficult teams to beat at home. With passionate crowds filling Energizer Park, the team thrives on high pressure, quick transitions, and a relentless attacking style.

Key to St. Louis’ identity is forward Joao Klauss, whose physicality and finishing ability continue to trouble defenses. The midfield trio has also shown strength in dictating tempo and winning second balls, an area Dallas will need to monitor closely.

Defensively, however, CITY SC has at times been vulnerable to counterattacks, something Dallas’ pace on the wings and efficiency in transition could exploit.

Players to Watch

  • FC Dallas: Alan Velasco — The Argentine playmaker remains central to Dallas’ creativity. His ability to unlock defenses and deliver set-piece quality will be vital in a hostile road environment.

  • FC Dallas: Jesús Ferreira — As the club’s leading scorer, Ferreira’s knack for timing his runs and converting chances could tilt the match. He has a proven record in high-pressure games.

  • St. Louis: Joao Klauss — The Brazilian striker is CITY SC’s attacking focal point. Dallas’ back line will need to stay organized to limit his touches in dangerous areas.

  • St. Louis: Roman Bürki — The veteran goalkeeper provides leadership and big saves, often bailing out his defense in critical moments.

What’s at Stake

For Dallas, the match represents another test of endurance and quality against a Western Conference foe with playoff ambitions. A victory would extend their reputation as one of MLS’s toughest road sides and keep pace in a crowded postseason race.

For St. Louis, the matchup offers a chance to solidify home dominance and send a message that Energizer Park remains a fortress.

Outlook

Both clubs enter with something to prove — Dallas seeking to rekindle its early-season road magic, and St. Louis eager to strengthen its playoff positioning with another home win. Expect a tightly contested battle where momentum swings will be critical.

Prediction: St. Louis CITY SC 2, FC Dallas 1
