STWF Sports | TOLUCA, Estado de México, Mexico | August 12, 2026 — FC Dallas closed out Phase One of the 2026 Leagues Cup with a 3-1 loss to Toluca FC on Wednesday night at Estadio Nemesio Diez, ending a memorable group-stage run that included victories over Querétaro FC and C.D. Guadalajara.
FC Dallas: A Competitive Edge in the Leagues Cup
Dallas finished Phase One with a 2-1-0 record and six points, matching Toluca’s total after Wednesday’s result.
The night began with immediate adversity for FC Dallas, but the visitors responded quickly through one of their most dangerous attacking weapons.
Petar Musa scored his first career Leagues Cup goal in the ninth minute, pulling Dallas level at 1-1 and briefly silencing a passionate home crowd.
The Croatian striker’s goal continued an impressive 2026 campaign. Musa, who is tied for the MLS lead with 13 regular-season goals, now has 14 goals across all competitions this year.
Dallas appeared to settle into the match following the equalizer, but Toluca gradually regained control with its pressure, movement and ability to capitalize on mistakes.
A critical moment came late in the first half when Toluca regained the lead, sending FC Dallas into halftime trailing 2-1.
Head coach Eric Quill pointed to decision-making as one of the biggest factors in the defeat.
“I was really proud of our response to go 1-1 right off the bat,” Quill said. “And yet they overpowered us again with their mentality and their quality of play.”
Quill also acknowledged that the second Toluca goal had a significant impact on his team’s confidence entering the break.
Dallas’ situation became even more difficult shortly after halftime when Toluca struck again to extend the advantage to 3-1.
From there, FC Dallas attempted to find a route back into the match but struggled to consistently create dangerous opportunities against a Toluca side fueled by the atmosphere inside Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Quill credited both the home supporters and Toluca’s overall performance.
“The crowd was amazing,” Quill said. “The stadium energy was outstanding. Toluca performed tonight much better than we did in pretty much every phase of the game. So they were deserving winners tonight.”
The match carried historical significance for Dallas.
It marked the first time FC Dallas faced Toluca in official competition and the club’s first Leagues Cup match played in Mexico. Dallas had previously traveled south of the border for Concacaf Champions League matches against Pumas UNAM and Pachuca CF.
FC Dallas is now 1-2-0 all-time in official competition played in Mexico.
Despite Wednesday’s result, Dallas leaves the opening phase with several positives after earning victories over two Liga MX opponents. The club defeated Querétaro and Guadalajara before facing Toluca in its final match.
Forward Sam Sarver said the tournament showed that Dallas can compete with strong Mexican opposition.
“I think we have a lot to be proud of,” Sarver said. “Showing that we can compete with these teams is important. Tonight didn’t go our way, but we’ll take what we learned from this competition and use it in MLS play.”
That shift in focus will come quickly.
FC Dallas returns to MLS competition on Sunday, August 16, when it travels to Q2 Stadium for another installment of its in-state rivalry with Austin FC.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT as part of MLS Sunday Night Soccer.
For Dallas, the challenge now is turning the lessons from a demanding Leagues Cup run into momentum for the stretch drive of the MLS regular season.
