MLS Recap: FC Dallas Settles for 1-1 Draw Against Sporting Kansas City as Late Penalty Denies Road Victory

STWF SPORTS | KANSAS CITY, Kan. | OCTOBER 31, 2026 – FC Dallas came within moments of securing another road victory Saturday afternoon but ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park.

Herman Johansson opened the scoring with his first career FC Dallas goal before Sporting defender Jansen Miller equalized just before halftime. The afternoon delivered one final dramatic moment when goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland denied Petar Musa’s penalty attempt deep into second-half stoppage time.

The result moved Dallas to 15-8-10 with 55 points, while Sporting Kansas City finished the afternoon at 6-22-5 with 23 points.

Despite missing an opportunity to collect three points, Dallas secured a top-four Western Conference finish and home-field advantage in the opening round of the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Johansson Opens Scoring With First Dallas Goal

Dallas established an early advantage through an impressive attacking sequence in the 19th minute.

The move developed from goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois through Daniel Job before Ran Binyamin helped create the final scoring opportunity.

Binyamin delivered an unselfish pass to Johansson, who finished from close range to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.

The goal marked Johansson’s first for the club, while Binyamin collected his third assist and Santiago Moreno earned his fourth of the season.

The Swedish international’s breakthrough provided another encouraging development during his first campaign in Major League Soccer.

Sporting Kansas City Responds Before Halftime

Sporting Kansas City answered in first-half stoppage time when Miller connected with an Owen Wolff free kick at the back post.

The 45th-minute-plus-two header marked Miller’s first career MLS goal and sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

Dallas defender Osaze Urhoghide later acknowledged the defensive lapse, noting that an unmarked player at the back post allowed Sporting to capitalize on the set piece.

Neither side found a breakthrough during the second half, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Cleveland Denies Musa in Stoppage Time

Dallas appeared poised to steal all three points when a video review resulted in a penalty following a handball decision against Miller.

Musa stepped forward in the 96th minute with an opportunity to secure the victory.

However, Cleveland anticipated the attempt, diving to his right to make the decisive save.

The stop preserved the draw and prevented Dallas from completing its regular-season road schedule with an eighth away victory.

Dallas finished with 10 shots and seven corner kicks, while Sporting recorded eight attempts and controlled 55 percent of possession.

Record-Setting Road Campaign

Although Dallas missed out on the victory, Saturday’s result completed a historic regular-season road campaign.

The club finished 7-5-5 away from home, setting a franchise record for road wins in the post-shootout era.

Dallas also scored a club-record 30 away goals, demonstrating the offensive improvement achieved under second-year head coach Eric Quill.

Quill Praises Team’s Resilience

Following the match, Quill praised his team’s tactical discipline and collective effort, particularly after making several changes to the starting lineup.

Lalas Abubakar, Binyamin, Job and Sirois all returned to the starting eleven.

Quill also emphasized Johansson’s development and the importance of securing home-field advantage for the playoffs.

The Dallas coach expressed confidence that his squad could build on its achievements and enter postseason competition with momentum.

Dallas Turns Attention to Decision Day

FC Dallas returns to Toyota Stadium on Saturday, November 7, to host the Colorado Rapids in its regular-season finale.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT as Dallas celebrates Fan Appreciation Night.

With a top-four Western Conference finish secured, Dallas will look to sharpen its attacking execution and strengthen its defensive organization before the playoffs.

Saturday’s result highlighted both the progress and the remaining challenges for Quill’s squad.

For FC Dallas, the 1-1 draw represents another point in a historic road campaign, but the missed opportunity in stoppage time serves as a reminder that finishing chances will be critical when postseason soccer begins.
