MLS Recap: Petar Musa’s Late Penalty Helps FC Dallas Earn 2-2 Draw at Houston, Reclaim El Capitán

STWF Sports| HOUSTON, Texas| October 17, 2026 — FC Dallas showed its resilience once again Saturday night, battling to a 2-2 draw against Houston Dynamo FC at Shell Energy Stadium and reclaiming El Capitán in the latest edition of the Texas Derby.

Dallas improved to 14-7-9 with 51 points, while Houston moved to 13-9-8 with 47 points. The result also featured another milestone for forward Petar Musa, who scored his 20th goal of the regular season and became the first player in FC Dallas history to reach that mark in a single campaign.

Musa’s record-setting goal came from the penalty spot in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time, rescuing a point for Dallas after a chaotic finish.

Musa Reaches 20 Goals

The Croatian forward entered the night already having rewritten the club’s single-season scoring record, and he added another historic chapter by becoming the first FC Dallas player to score 20 regular-season goals.

Musa finished the night second in the MLS Golden Boot race behind Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi.

His late equalizer came after a night that tested Dallas’ composure. Head coach Eric Quill praised Musa for responding under pressure.

“Confidence can take a hit after missing a penalty, but Musa stepped up, and that’s why he’s a killer,” Quill said. “I’m really proud of him for getting that moment back.”

Cappis Strikes in Hometown

Dallas opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Christian Cappis, who found the net for the second time in his FC Dallas career.

The goal carried extra meaning for Cappis, a Houston native, who scored in front of family and friends.

Daniel Job recorded his first assist for the club, while Bernard Kamungo added his fifth assist of the season on the play. Cappis also became the 15th different player to score for Dallas this season.

“It was great to score my first goal of the season, and doing it with my family here made it even more special,” Cappis said.

Job Makes First Start

Job made his first FC Dallas start in the Texas Derby after joining the club during the summer transfer window from Norwegian side Kongsvinger IL.

The Nigerian winger made an immediate impact, helping create Dallas’ opening goal and later earning a penalty kick.

His performance gave Dallas another attacking option as the club prepares for postseason play.

Dallas Shows Late Fight

Houston managed to turn the match around and put Dallas under pressure, but the visitors continued to push for an equalizer.

Quill said the group’s response reflected the mentality he wants to see heading into the playoffs.

“We don’t lose our fight,” Quill said. “That’s our mentality. We have a championship mentality, and we’re going to keep fighting.”

Patrickson Delgado echoed that sentiment, noting that Dallas felt it had done enough to win but still showed character in earning the late point.

El Capitán Returns to Dallas

The draw was enough for FC Dallas to reclaim El Capitán, something Quill said carried extra significance after last season.

Dallas also continued to show strong form late in the season, with Quill emphasizing the importance of entering the playoffs with momentum.

The club has already clinched a postseason berth and will now look to sharpen its form over the final stretch.

FC Dallas returns home next Saturday to face the San Jose Earthquakes at Toyota Stadium on Harry Potter Night presented by UMB Bank.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on Apple TV.

For Dallas, Saturday’s draw was not perfect, but it delivered another example of a team that continues to find ways to respond when the pressure rises.
