Colonels build a two-goal lead before Lamar rallies in the second half
BEAUMONT, Texas — Nicholls women’s soccer walked away from the LU Soccer Complex with a point Sunday afternoon after battling Lamar to a 2-2 draw in Southland Conference action.
The Colonels came out strong and built a 2-0 advantage before the Cardinals answered with a pair of goals less than a minute apart in the second half.
Nicholls moved to 3-3-5 overall and 1-0-2 in Southland play, while Lamar moved to 4-2-4 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action.
Nicholls Strikes First
The Colonels took the lead in the 15th minute when Kate Guillory found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Alyssa Wheeler picked up the assist on the play, helping Nicholls grab an early 1-0 advantage on the road.
That score held through halftime despite Lamar controlling much of the attacking pressure. The Cardinals finished the opening half with nine shots compared to six for Nicholls and also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Still, the Colonels were able to make their opportunities count.
Wheeler Doubles the Lead
Nicholls wasted little time adding to its advantage after the break.
Just over a minute into the second half, Wheeler scored her sixth goal of the season in the 47th minute to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.
After assisting on the opening goal, Wheeler’s score put Nicholls in position to potentially leave Beaumont with a conference road victory.
Lamar, however, responded with a quick surge midway through the half.
Lamar Scores Twice in 35 Seconds
The Cardinals cut the Nicholls lead in half in the 65th minute when Sofia Wilby scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Kamryn Harvey.
Only 35 seconds later, Lamar struck again.
This time Harvey moved from assisting to scoring, finding the back of the net at the 64:49 mark on an assist from Emma Oubrik to tie the match at 2-2.
From there, neither team was able to find the deciding goal.
Colonels Hold On for a Point
Lamar finished the match with a 17-11 advantage in total shots and put five attempts on goal compared to three for Nicholls.
The Cardinals also controlled the corner kick battle 10-0.
Nicholls goalkeeper and defense were able to withstand that pressure, with the Colonels recording three saves compared to one for Lamar.
Despite being outshot and playing much of the match under pressure, Nicholls made the most of its limited chances and came away with a valuable road result.
The Colonels were called for eight fouls compared to nine for Lamar, while Nicholls defender Olivia Holmes received the match’s only yellow card in the 87th minute.
