ARLINGTON, Texas — The Kansas City Royals finally broke through Tuesday night, snapping a six-game losing streak behind a vintage performance from Salvador Perez and a dominant outing by Seth Lugo. With a 6-1 win over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, Kansas City ended a frustrating skid and handed the defending World Series champs their fifth straight winless result against KC.
Perez set the tone early with a two-run blast in the first and added a solo shot in the sixth, his eighth homer of the season. The veteran catcher finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, passing Hall of Famer George Brett for the most multi-homer games in franchise history (18).
Fellow All-Star Bobby Witt Jr. joined the home run party with his first career blast at Globe Life Field—an extra-special moment for the Dallas-area native, whose father, former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt Sr., spent more than a decade with the Rangers.
Lugo Shines in Return to All-Star Stage
Seth Lugo, who tossed a scoreless inning at last summer’s All-Star Game in this very ballpark, returned to Arlington in style. The right-hander struck out a season-high nine batters over six innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. The win was Lugo’s first since May 1, improving his record to 4-5.
Lugo, Perez, and Witt—Kansas City’s trio of 2023 All-Stars—each made key contributions as the Royals halted an 0-6 homestand and avoided falling further behind in a tight AL Central race.
Leiter Tagged Early in Home Loss
Jack Leiter, the Rangers’ highly-touted rookie and son of former All-Star Al Leiter, endured one of his roughest outings of the season. He allowed eight hits and six runs across 5 2/3 innings, matching season highs in both categories.
Witt and Leiter—both second-generation stars—faced off for the first time in the big leagues, with Witt getting the better of the duel thanks to a fourth-inning solo shot.
Rangers Struggle at the Plate
Texas mustered just five hits and struck out 14 times—tying a season high. Their lone run came courtesy of rookie Alejandro Osuna, who drove in his first career RBI in the fourth inning. That trimmed the Royals’ lead to 4-1, but any momentum was short-lived after Perez’s second homer.
Notable Numbers:
- Salvador Perez: 3-for-4, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs, franchise-record 18th multi-homer game
- Seth Lugo: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 9 K (season high)
- Bobby Witt Jr.: 1-for-4, solo HR
- Jack Leiter: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 K
