Prairie View A&M Stays Perfect in SWAC Play with 24–3 Win Over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La.| October 18, 2025 – The Prairie View A&M Panthers continued their dominance in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, improving to 4–0 in the SWAC with a convincing 24–3 road win over the Southern University Jaguars on Saturday afternoon at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Running back Lamagea McDowell powered the Panthers’ offense with two touchdown runs, while quarterback Cameron Peters orchestrated a balanced offensive attack to keep Prairie View atop the SWAC West standings.

The victory marked Prairie View’s fifth win of the season and showcased the team’s consistency under head coach Bubba McDowell, who has quietly molded the Panthers into one of the conference’s most complete teams.

Early Defensive Battle Turns One-Sided

The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and struggling to establish rhythm on offense throughout the first quarter. Southern’s defensive front, led by Caleb Johnson, managed to pressure Peters early, but Prairie View’s offense found its footing early in the second quarter.

McDowell, a sophomore tailback known for his red-zone efficiency, broke through for a 15-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. The Panthers’ offensive line—anchored by James Tyson and Kahlil Chappell—controlled the trenches from that point forward, creating running lanes and protecting Peters efficiently.

Following the breakthrough score, Prairie View began to dictate tempo and field position. The defense, which has been one of the best in the SWAC this season, forced three straight punts from the Jaguars’ offense, limiting them to just 28 total yards in the second quarter.

With momentum building, Peters engineered a 9-play, 67-yard drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Jyzaiah Rockwell, putting the Panthers ahead 14–0. A 30-yard field goal by kicker Aiden Webb as time expired in the first half extended the lead to 17–0, effectively silencing the home crowd.

Prairie View’s Offense Stays Efficient

Peters turned in one of his most efficient performances of the season, completing 19 of 31 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. While the stat sheet may not tell the full story, his command of the offense and ability to extend plays proved vital.

“Cameron did a great job managing the game,” Coach McDowell said after the win. “He made smart decisions, didn’t force anything, and allowed our running game and defense to do the heavy lifting.”

McDowell finished with 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while Chase Bingmon provided valuable support with 64 yards on 13 carries and another 52 yards receiving. The backfield duo consistently kept Southern’s defense off balance with inside runs and short passes.

The Panthers tallied 388 total yards of offense, converting seven of their 13 third-down opportunities and controlling possession for more than 34 minutes.

Defensive Masterclass

Prairie View’s defense once again proved why it’s one of the toughest units in the conference. The Panthers held Southern to just 3 points and 81 passing yards, intercepting one pass and allowing no touchdowns.

Cornerback Jeremiah Johnson and safety Isaiah Lewis were instrumental in coverage, while linebacker Tyler Henderson led the team with nine tackles. The defensive front, led by Darius Campbell, consistently collapsed the pocket, forcing Southern quarterback Ashton Strother into hurried throws and short completions.

Southern’s lone bright spot came from freshman running back Trey Holly, who rushed for 99 yards on 21 carries, showing burst and vision even against a disciplined Prairie View front seven.

However, the Jaguars’ offense sputtered for most of the game, failing to finish drives and struggling to convert on third down (2-for-11). Southern’s only points came from Nathan Zimmer’s 36-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, which made it 17–3 at the time.

Any hopes of a comeback were dashed late in the fourth quarter when McDowell punched in his second touchdown of the night, this time from 1 yard out, putting the game out of reach at 24–3.

Coach McDowell Praises Team’s Focus

After the win, Coach McDowell credited his players for maintaining composure and consistency on the road.

“We played physical football tonight,” McDowell said. “The defense has been lights-out, and our offense executed when it mattered. You can’t ask for much more on the road in a conference game.”

The victory gives Prairie View control of its destiny in the SWAC West Division heading into the final stretch of the season.

What’s Next

Prairie View A&M (5–2, 4–0 SWAC) returns home next weekend to face Texas Southern in the annual Labor Day Classic rematch, looking to extend its perfect conference record.

Southern University (1–6, 0–3 SWAC), meanwhile, will try to regroup as it travels to face Alcorn State, hoping to end a three-game losing skid.

Final Thoughts

Prairie View’s 24–3 win over Southern wasn’t just another victory—it was a statement. Behind a stifling defense and the steady play of Peters and McDowell, the Panthers continue to look like legitimate contenders for the SWAC Championship.

If their balance on both sides of the ball continues, this might just be the year Prairie View finally climbs back to the top of the SWAC mountain.
