The pipeline from the United Football League (UFL) to the NFL continues to grow, as Arlington Renegades tight end Sal Cannella has signed with the Cleveland Browns, the league announced Thursday. Cannella becomes the latest standout from the spring football ranks to earn another NFL shot, this time joining a Browns squad seeking to bolster its offensive weapons.
Cannella was a model of consistency and production for the Renegades during the 2025 UFL season, starting all 10 games and emerging as quarterback Luis Perez’s most reliable target. He led Arlington in both receptions (44) and receiving yards (474) while adding a touchdown, en route to All-UFL honors. His 474 receiving yards ranked sixth in the league overall and first among all tight ends, while his reception total also ranked second in the league, once again tops at his position.
Proven Production in the UFL
Cannella’s performance this season builds on an already impressive spring football résumé. In 2024, he racked up 53 catches for 496 yards and six scores, and in 2023, he played a pivotal role in Arlington’s XFL Championship run, finishing with 42 receptions for 415 yards.
Known for his crisp route running, soft hands, and ability to create mismatches in coverage, Cannella has evolved into one of the most dynamic pass-catching tight ends outside the NFL over the past three years.
Back on the NFL Radar
The 6-foot-5, 241-pound Auburn alum is no stranger to NFL opportunities. He’s had previous training camp stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2024), Seattle Seahawks (2023), Green Bay Packers (2022), and Miami Dolphins (2021). Additionally, he’s worked out for the Minnesota Vikings and participated in a mini-camp with the Chicago Bears. Despite falling just short of making an active roster, Cannella’s persistent development and standout UFL performances have kept him on NFL radars.
Now, with a chance to crack Cleveland’s tight end room—headlined by David Njoku—Cannella could carve out a complementary role or contribute on special teams.
Renegades Hold Cannella’s UFL Rights
While Cannella begins this next chapter in the NFL, the Arlington Renegades retain his UFL rights, keeping the door open for a potential return to the league should he not stick in Cleveland.
From JUCO to the Pros
Cannella’s football journey began at Scottsdale Community College, before he transferred to Auburn University, where he logged 25 catches for 330 yards and five touchdowns across 37 games.
With a blend of size, experience, and proven production, Sal Cannella now takes his next shot at the NFL, hoping to finally break through and bring his spring football dominance to Sundays.
