RoughRiders Rally to Clinch Series Over RockHounds, Maintain Division Lead

The Frisco RoughRiders continued their push toward a first-half title, rallying to defeat the Midland RockHounds 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Momentum Bank Ballpark. The win gave Frisco (36-26) a 4-2 series victory and extended their lead in the Texas League South Division to 1.5 games with six contests left in the first half.

Scoreless through four innings, the RoughRiders broke the game open in the fifth. A throwing error by RockHounds catcher Cole Conn allowed Cam Cauley to score from third, and shortly after, top prospect Sebastian Walcott drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Abimelec Ortiz, giving Frisco a 2-0 edge.

In the sixth, the Riders poured it on. Ortiz ripped an RBI double before Keyber Rodriguez drove in two more runs with a single, stretching the lead to 5-0. Ortiz had a standout afternoon, going 3-for-4 at the plate and setting the tone offensively.

On the mound, right-hander Trey Supak (4-2) delivered a strong outing, tossing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts and three walks to earn the win. The RockHounds (35-28) attempted a late push, scoring twice in the seventh on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch, but Frisco’s bullpen shut the door. Bryan Magdaleno handled the eighth with a clean frame, and Gavin Collyer notched his team-leading sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

Key Notes:

  • The RoughRiders’ magic number to clinch the first-half title now stands at five.
  • Frisco is 8-4 against Midland this season, with 10 of the 12 matchups decided by three runs or fewer and six by just one run.
  • Impressively, the Riders claimed the series without hitting a single home run.
  • Frisco has Monday off before opening a critical six-game road series against the San Antonio Missions on Tuesday, June 17, at 7:05 p.m. from Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.

With the first-half playoff berth within reach, every game down the stretch carries weight for the RoughRiders as they eye back-to-back postseason appearances.
