The New Orleans Saints opened their preseason against the Los Angeles Chargers with second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler getting the starting nod from head coach Kellen Moore. The decision comes amid an ongoing competition between Rattler, rookie Tyler Shough, and third-year pro Jake Haener for the starting job following Derek Carr’s retirement.
Rattler, a fifth-round pick out of South Carolina in 2024, went 0-6 as a starter last season, throwing for 1,317 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. In the preseason opener, he completed 7 of 11 passes for 53 yards and added 22 rushing yards on three scrambles, but also lost a fumble after being sacked.
Rookie Tyler Shough took over in the second quarter and delivered the highlight of the night for New Orleans—a 54-yard touchdown pass to receiver Mason Tipton. Shough finished 15 of 22 for 165 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jake Haener entered late in the game but struggled, throwing an interception that set up the Chargers’ final score.
The Saints moved the ball effectively at times, finishing with 297 total yards compared to the Chargers’ 248. They held the ball for just over 31 minutes but went only 3-for-13 on third down and failed to score a touchdown on two trips to the red zone. The Chargers capitalized on Saints turnovers, scoring twice off interceptions and controlling the game in the second half.
The final score was Chargers 27, Saints 13. While the loss stung, the quarterback battle remains very much alive. Rattler showed improved decision-making and mobility, Shough displayed big-play potential, and Haener will have to bounce back in the next opportunity. Coach Moore emphasized that the preseason is about evaluation, and no decision has been made on the Week 1 starter.
