NEW ORLEANS, LA — The New Orleans Saints have added veteran depth to their backfield, officially signing running back Cam Akers to a one-year deal following a successful tryout during mandatory minicamp this week, the team announced Friday.

Akers, who turns 26 later this month, practiced with the Saints over two days and impressed enough to earn a spot in a competitive running back room that already includes Alvin Kamara, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kendre Miller, and rookie Devin Neal.

“Cam is an experienced player,” said Saints head coach Kellen Moore on Tuesday. “He’s done a lot throughout this league. As you go through this, you’re always trying to evaluate as many players as you possibly can. So we felt like it was a great opportunity, and we are fired up that he was wanting to come out here.”

A 2020 second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams, Akers has had a winding NFL journey, tallying 2,025 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 502 carries across five seasons. He also brings added value as a receiver, with 52 receptions for 388 yards and four scores.

After starting his career in Los Angeles, Akers was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2023, later signing briefly with the Houston Texans before returning to Minnesota for a second stint.

His most notable performances came during his rookie season, when he rushed for 625 yards and added 131 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Wild Card victory over the Seahawks. He also made a miraculous return from an Achilles tear in 2021, playing a key role in the Rams’ postseason run that culminated in a Super Bowl LVI victory.

With uncertainty surrounding the future workload of Kamara and depth questions behind him, Akers could carve out a meaningful role in New Orleans’ revamped offense.
