The Nicholls State University softball team is set to open the 2026 season this weekend by traveling to Montgomery, Alabama, to compete in the Stinger Classic. The tournament provides the Colonels with an early opportunity to test themselves against a diverse field and set the tone for the new year.
Nicholls will play four games over two days, opening the weekend on Friday with matchups against Lindenwood and Murray State before wrapping up play Saturday against Southern Indiana and host Alabama State University.
Now in his second season at the helm, head coach Ron Frost brings back a veteran roster that showed significant growth a year ago. The Colonels are coming off a strong 2025 campaign that saw the program rewrite parts of its offensive record book, including posting the highest team batting average in school history while also setting marks for runs scored and doubles in a single season.
That offensive firepower returns in large part, with several experienced hitters and leaders back in the lineup. The combination of consistency at the plate and increased depth across the roster helped Nicholls put together a long midseason winning streak last year and remain in contention deep into conference play.
This weekend’s tournament will serve as a valuable measuring stick early in the season, giving the Colonels a chance to face unfamiliar opponents while sharpening their execution in all phases of the game. With expectations rising and continuity throughout the roster, Nicholls enters the 2026 season aiming to build on last year’s momentum and make an early statement in Montgomery.
