SWAC TV Keeps Pace with ESPN — Commissioner Says “The Future Is Here”
At the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)’s Board of Supervisors meeting — held on the eve of the annual Bayou Classic — Dr. Charles McClelland announced that the conference’s new streaming network, SWAC TV, which launched this past July, is already delivering significant returns in viewership and revenue.
McClelland revealed that SWAC TV has outpaced the conference’s prior numbers on ESPN platforms. While SWAC contests on ESPN platforms logged about 20,216,000 minutes watched during the previous fiscal year, SWAC TV has already recorded approximately 26,990,652 minutes viewed so far this year.
According to the conference’s internal data, that viewing translates into roughly 895,000 unique viewers across 42 live football games. Even though most SWAC football games remain available on ESPN+, McClelland argued that this early success shows SWAC TV is capable of competing with — and in some respects surpassing — major national providers.
Beyond the raw numbers, McClelland emphasized the strategic benefits of owning a dedicated platform. SWAC TV allows the conference to present its content — from games to features — on its own terms rather than being dependent on traditional networks. He asserted that this gives SWAC the ability to showcase its member institutions and athletes “as good as and better than” those on larger networks.
On the financial side, McClelland said the move toward digital streaming positions SWAC uniquely among FCS and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) leagues, offering long-term revenue potential that may outpace any comparable league. He credited the network’s early success to strong institutional support and a passionate fan base.
