Tulsa Oilers Football Extends Head Coach Marvin Jones Through 2027

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Oilers Football, proud member of the Indoor Football League (IFL) and powered by Community Care, has announced a multi-year extension with head coach Marvin Jones, keeping him at the helm through the 2027 season.

Jones guided the Oilers to their most successful regular season in franchise history in 2025, finishing 10-6 and securing the team’s first-ever playoff berth. The extension marks his third year leading the Black and Gold and his eighth overall as a professional head coach.

“Coach Jones has done a terrific job with this team, getting us to the playoffs in only three seasons,” said Oilers owner Andy Scurto. “We’re thrilled to extend his time in Tulsa and want to give him every opportunity to bring a championship to this city.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Born in Miami, Florida, Jones starred at Miami Northwestern High School, a program known for producing NFL talent such as Amari Cooper and Teddy Bridgewater. He went on to play linebacker at Florida State University from 1990–1992, where he became one of the most decorated players in Seminole history.

In 1992, Jones became the first FSU player to win two national awards in the same season, capturing both the Butkus Award (nation’s top linebacker) and the Lombardi Award (exemplifying Vince Lombardi’s discipline and character). That same year, he was named Sporting News College Football Player of the Year. His legacy was later cemented with induction into the Florida State Football Hall of Fame (2000), his No. 55 jersey retired, and eventual enshrinement in the College Football Hall of Fame (2022).

Jones was selected fourth overall by the New York Jets in the 1993 NFL Draft. Across 11 seasons (1993–2003), he appeared in 142 games, recording more than 1,200 tackles, including over 700 solo stops, establishing himself as one of the most productive linebackers of his era.

Coaching Career

Jones began his coaching career in 2014 with the Brooklyn Bolts of the FXFL, where his defense led the league and won the championship. He went on to serve as Defensive Coordinator for the Hudson Valley Fort (2015) and later rejoined the New York Jets as a coaching intern (2016).

His IFL journey began in 2017 with the Colorado Crush as Defensive Coordinator and Interim Head Coach, followed by a stint with the Cedar Rapids Titans (2018), where his defense ranked first in passing yards allowed. In 2019, Jones joined the Omaha Beef of the CIF as Defensive Coordinator before taking over as head coach, leading the team to a 2021 championship and another championship appearance in 2022. He compiled an 18-8 record in Omaha across three seasons.

Jones also serves as Defensive Coordinator for the Spiral Tropical Bowl in Daytona, Florida, a showcase event for college athletes in front of NFL and CFL scouts.

Tulsa Era and Beyond

Since arriving in Tulsa, Jones has been committed not only to building a winning program but also to developing the next generation of talent. “I am looking forward to evaluating the great talent in northeast Oklahoma and beyond,” Jones said. “This region is rich with young players, and we are excited about what that means for our future.”

Off the field, Jones continues to give back through the Marvin Jones Charitable Foundation, which he founded in 1999 to support underprivileged youth and empower them to serve their communities.

With Jones leading the way, the Oilers look to build on their historic 2025 campaign and set their sights on bringing a championship to Tulsa.
