Twelve Catches, 225 Yards… and One Explosive Tweet: Puka Nacua vs. NFL Officials

STWF Sports | Dec. 19, 2025 – Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua delivered one of the greatest statistical performances of his young career on Thursday night — and then created one of the week’s biggest controversies. Following the Rams’ devastating 38–37 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Nacua doubled down on recent criticism of NFL officials, igniting league-wide debate and prompting an awkward reaction from head coach Sean McVay.

Nacua, who finished with 12 catches, 225 yards, and two touchdowns in a spectacular individual showing, took to social media shortly after the defeat. His since-deleted tweet read: “Can you say I was wrong. Appreciate your stripes for your contribution. Lol.” The jab, dripping with sarcasm, quickly exploded across the internet — especially given that the second-year star had already made headlines this week for blasting referees during an appearance on influencer Adin Ross’s livestream.

“The refs are the worst,” Nacua said during the stream. “Some of the rules aren’t… These guys want to be… these guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV too. You don’t think he’s texting his friends in the group chat like, ‘Yo, you guys saw me on Sunday Night Football? That wasn’t P.I., but I called it.’”

Controversial Call Likely Triggered Nacua’s Outburst

While Nacua didn’t specify which moment set him off, there was no shortage of controversial officiating decisions throughout the NFC West thriller. The most significant came in the fourth quarter, when a deflected Sam Darnold pass — initially appearing to be an incomplete throw — was ruled a fumble before Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet recovered it in the end zone for a game-tying touchdown.

The reversal stunned both teams and their fanbases, and the call immediately became a lightning rod for debate on broadcast and social media. For Nacua, who had been visibly emotional throughout the contest, it appears to have been the breaking point.

Record-Breaking Night Overshadowed

The frustration came on a night when Nacua made history. His 225-yard performance marked his third straight game with at least 150 receiving yards — the longest streak in NFL history. It was a display of dominance reminiscent of elite receivers like Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, and Antonio Brown, and it underscored Nacua’s emergence as one of the NFL’s most unstoppable offensive weapons.

Yet instead of basking in his historic achievement, the postgame narrative quickly shifted to his deleted tweet — and to the reaction of his head coach.

McVay Caught Off Guard

During the postgame press conference, a reporter asked McVay about Nacua’s social-media comments. The Rams head coach appeared blindsided.

“What are you talking about?” McVay asked repeatedly, clearly taken aback. “What are you asking me right now? I can’t answer questions about something that I’m not aware of. I gotta have more information before I answer any of those kind of questions.”

McVay’s confusion mirrored that of many viewers who hadn’t yet seen Nacua’s viral post. Tensions had already run high earlier in the game, when McVay exploded at officials following a questionable illegal man downfield penalty against rookie lineman Justin Dedich — a call that wiped out a touchdown.

Prime Video analyst Terry McAulay quickly disagreed with the flag.

“You don’t often see illegal man downfield from the half-yard line,” Al Michaels said.

“And this really isn’t a foul,” McAulay responded, as cameras showed McVay berating the officials.

“A thousand percent,” Michaels added.

Nacua Walks It Back — But Stands by His Frustration

After meeting with reporters, Nacua acknowledged the tweet and attempted to soften his stance.

“A moment of frustration after a tough, intense game like that,” he said. “It was just a lack of awareness… I know there were moments where I feel like, man, you watch the other games and you think of the calls that some guys get.”

Still, his comments — both on social media and during the Ross livestream — will likely draw the attention of the league office, which has historically fined players for publicly criticizing officials.

A Star Ascending, A Spotlight Intensifying

As the Rams push toward the postseason, Puka Nacua’s star continues to rise — but with it comes scrutiny and expectation. His record-setting performances have made him the face of the Rams’ offense. His public critiques of referees, however, may test the league’s patience.

What is certain is this: Puka Nacua gave the NFL another unforgettable moment on Thursday. Drama, emotion, brilliance — and controversy. And the season is far from over.
