Underwood Named Starting QB For Michigan

The future of Michigan football will take the field Saturday, and he’s only a freshman.

Bryce Underwood, the five-star phenom from Belleville, Michigan, has been named the Wolverines’ starting quarterback for their season opener against New Mexico. At 6-foot-4 and 228 pounds, Underwood isn’t just the new face of the program—he’s being handed the keys to one of the most storied programs in college football before ever playing a down.

For head coach Sherrone Moore, now in his second year leading Michigan, the decision wasn’t about hype or recruiting rankings. It was about what he’s seen every day in practice.

“Bryce has shown tremendous poise and a strong command of the offense since the moment he stepped on campus,” Moore said. “He’s got the arm, he’s got the accuracy, and most importantly, he has the mindset. This isn’t too big for him. We trust him to lead this team.”

Underwood’s journey to Ann Arbor has already been a headline-maker. Once committed to LSU, he flipped to Michigan late last year, sending shockwaves through the recruiting world. Now, just months later, he’s poised to step onto the field in maize and blue with the weight of a program’s expectations on his shoulders.

For his part, Underwood isn’t shying away from the moment.
“I’m ready for this opportunity,” he said. “I’ve worked hard since I got here, and I know there’s still a lot to learn, but I believe in myself and I believe in my teammates. This is what I came here for—to compete, to grow, and to win.”

The Wolverines have had their share of uncertainty at quarterback since their last championship run, but Underwood’s arrival offers something rare: a glimpse of both the present and the future colliding at once. His spring game performance showed flashes of brilliance mixed with rookie mistakes, but to Moore and his staff, the potential outweighed the polish.

Saturday night in Ann Arbor, Underwood won’t just be making his college debut. He’ll be stepping into the spotlight as the player Michigan believes can carry them into their next era.
