UNO Officially Joins LSU System and Will Be Called LSU-New Orleans

UNO Name to Change To LSU-New Orleans

The University of New Orleans’ transition back to the LSU system is officially underway, and early mockups revealed during a Wednesday committee meeting suggest the school’s familiar look could soon change.

Preliminary logo designs, shown to the UNO transition committee, incorporated LSU’s signature purple and gold in place of UNO’s traditional blue and silver. One concept featured “LSU” in gold lettering with “New Orleans” in white against a purple background. Another resembled the current Privateers athletic logo but swapped in LSU’s color scheme of purple, gold, and white.

“These mockups were the first we’ve seen,” said interim athletic director Vince Granito in an interview with The Times-Picayune. “There’s been no discussion at the university about the logo before today. This might end up being the new look—but we just don’t know yet.”

UNO’s official transition to the LSU system is set for July 1, following the completion of the current academic year. For now, UNO remains a member of the University of Louisiana system, and Granito expects athletics operations to continue as usual.

“The transition team has started its work, but we haven’t received any formal direction,” Granito said. “We’re still in the UL system for this year.”

UNO originally joined the LSU system when it was founded in 1958 and operated as LSUNO until 1974, when it officially became the University of New Orleans. The school joined the University of Louisiana system in 2011 but is returning to LSU amid recent financial challenges. The Privateers nickname, adopted in 1965, has long been a staple of UNO athletics.
