UNO Unveils New Jumbotron with Help from Master P — A New Era at Lakefront Arena

October 14, 2025 | New Orleans, LA – Twenty years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, the University of New Orleans (UNO) is embracing a new era of revival and pride. On October 14, 2025, the university officially unveiled its brand-new Jumbotron inside the Lakefront Arena, marking both a technological and symbolic milestone for the Privateers basketball program.

The project — a collaboration between the university and former music mogul turned sports executive Master P — represents the latest in a series of major upgrades to the UNO athletics department. Master P, who now serves as President of Basketball Operations for the men’s program, spearheaded the initiative as part of his ongoing commitment to modernizing the Privateers’ facilities and culture.

A Symbol of Progress and Resilience

The installation of the new Jumbotron comes with powerful historical context. Hurricane Katrina, which struck New Orleans in 2005, left behind widespread destruction — including damage to university facilities that took years to repair. For many within the UNO community, the Jumbotron represents more than just a new scoreboard; it’s a symbol of perseverance, growth, and the enduring spirit of New Orleans athletics.

“It’s about legacy and leadership,” Master P said during the unveiling ceremony. “This is bigger than basketball — it’s about giving our players, our students, and our city something to be proud of. When you walk into Lakefront Arena now, you feel the energy, the new beginning.”

The ceremony was attended by university officials, alumni, players, and fans, all celebrating the new addition that will enhance the in-game experience for fans and players alike.

Master P’s Vision: From Music Mogul to Basketball Builder

Since joining UNO’s athletic leadership team in 2024, Master P — whose real name is Percy Miller — has infused the program with a unique blend of business acumen and cultural influence. His focus has been on elevating the Privateers’ brand through infrastructure, recruiting, and community engagement.

Under his guidance, UNO has already introduced new team uniforms, revamped the locker rooms, and invested in digital fan engagement initiatives — all part of what Miller calls the “New Orleans Swagger Project.”

“Coach P has brought a sense of pride and professionalism that our players feed off of,” said UNO head coach Mark Slessinger. “He challenges us to think bigger, act bolder, and show the city that UNO basketball belongs in the national conversation.”

The new Jumbotron, equipped with cutting-edge LED technology and in-game replay capabilities, is expected to transform the atmosphere at Lakefront Arena — giving fans a first-class entertainment experience similar to what they’d see at major Division I programs.

Timing the Transformation

The timing couldn’t be better. The unveiling comes just days before UNO’s marquee home game against Sacramento State on October 18, 2025, where fans will see the new Jumbotron in action for the first time. Adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup, Sacramento State’s roster features Shaquille O’Neal’s son, drawing added attention to the Lakefront Arena and further spotlighting UNO’s growing national relevance.

For a program looking to attract recruits and rebuild its fan base, the timing of this state-of-the-art upgrade is strategic.

“This is a statement,” said UNO Athletic Director Tim Duncan. “The new Jumbotron shows that UNO is serious about competing at a high level — on and off the court. It’s also a way of honoring how far this city has come in twenty years. We’re moving forward while never forgetting where we came from.”

Looking Ahead

As UNO prepares for the upcoming season, the excitement surrounding the team is palpable. With Master P continuing to expand his influence on the basketball side and new facilities signaling a rebirth of the Privateers’ identity, there’s optimism in the air around Lakefront Arena.

The new Jumbotron may just be the beginning of a broader renaissance for UNO athletics — one built on innovation, community pride, and a shared belief in what New Orleans can accomplish when it rallies together.

“Twenty years ago, this city was rebuilding from devastation,” Master P reflected. “Today, we’re rebuilding a legacy.”

And as the Lakefront Arena lights shine bright once again, the message is clear — the Privateers are back, and they’re doing it in style.
