WBB: Southern Miss Edges Nicholls

The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team fell 86–60 to Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.

Both teams opened the game sluggishly on offense, combining for just eight made field goals and 14 turnovers in the first quarter. The pace shifted in the second period as Nicholls (3–3) knocked down nine shots, including a pair from three-point range.

Despite the improved shooting, turnovers continued to plague the Colonels. Nicholls committed seven giveaways in the quarter and 15 in the first half, leading to 17 points for USM. The Golden Eagles capitalized with 13 made field goals in the frame to take a 49–31 lead into halftime.

Nicholls briefly cut the deficit to 15 midway through the third quarter, but the offense stalled again, allowing Southern Miss to regain momentum and extend its lead to as many as 29 in the second half.

Marie Kenembeni delivered her strongest performance as a Colonel, scoring 19 points on 8-of-xx shooting, including a three-pointer and two free throws. She added six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals—eight of her points coming before halftime. Jesslynn Jalomo also reached double figures with 10 points, connecting on three field goals, two threes, and a pair of free throws.

For Southern Miss, Carly Keats led all scorers with 23 points, while Meloney Thames and Sakyia White each contributed 12.
