WNBA Finals Game Preview: Las Vegas Aces Look to Complete the Sweep Against Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 Showdow

PHOENIX (Oct. 8, 2025) — With the Las Vegas Aces holding a commanding 2-0 lead in the 2025 WNBA Finals, the series shifts to the desert where the Phoenix Mercury will look to keep their season alive in Game 3 on Wednesday night (8 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Footprint Center. The Aces, one win away from a historic third straight championship, have shown championship composure, depth, and dominance through the opening two contests — while the Mercury are seeking answers to extend the series on their home floor.

Aces Eyeing Three-Peat Glory

The Aces have looked every bit like the dynasty they’ve become under head coach Becky Hammon, handling Phoenix 98–83 in Game 1 and 91–78 in Game 2. They’ve controlled the pace, punished the Mercury on the boards, and displayed their trademark offensive efficiency.

Leading the charge is A’ja Wilson, who continues to build her legacy as one of the WNBA’s all-time greats. Wilson has averaged 29.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks through the first two games, dominating both ends of the court. She has now recorded four consecutive playoff double-doubles and sits atop the all-time list for 20-point, 10-rebound performances in postseason play.

“We’re locked in, but we’re not satisfied,” Wilson said after Game 2. “We know the job’s not done, and we’re heading into a tough environment. Phoenix plays with a lot of pride, and we expect their best punch.”

Wilson’s frontcourt partner Kiah Stokes has been a defensive anchor, while Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young have provided balance and poise in the backcourt. Young, who erupted for a Finals record 21 points in the third quarter of Game 2, has emerged as a lethal scorer, averaging 26.0 points through the series.

“Jackie’s aggressiveness changes everything for us,” Hammon said. “She’s attacking, defending, and setting the tone on both ends.”

The Aces are now one win away from joining the Houston Comets (1997–2000) as the only franchise to win three consecutive WNBA championships.

Mercury on the Brink

For the Phoenix Mercury, Wednesday’s Game 3 is all about survival. They return home in desperation mode, looking to harness the energy of the Footprint Center crowd to slow down a red-hot Las Vegas squad.

Veteran forward DeWanna Bonner and guard Kahleah Copper have carried the offensive load for Phoenix, combining for 40+ points in each of the first two games. However, turnovers (averaging 15.5 per game) and second-chance points have plagued the Mercury, giving Las Vegas too many extra opportunities.

“We have to protect the basketball and match their intensity,” said Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts. “The effort is there, but against a team like Vegas, mistakes become points. We need to play clean, disciplined basketball and get the crowd behind us early.”

Phoenix may look to tighten rotations and lean on experienced shooters like Sami Whitcomb and Natasha Cloud to spread the floor and open driving lanes for Copper. Defensively, expect the Mercury to mix in zone and switch-heavy schemes to disrupt the Aces’ rhythm, particularly on pick-and-rolls involving Wilson and Gray.

Key Matchups and Momentum Shifts

One of the critical matchups heading into Game 3 will be how Phoenix contains A’ja Wilson without overcommitting defensively. Bonner and Brittney Griner — who continues to work her way back to full strength — will likely alternate defensive assignments in an effort to slow Wilson’s inside dominance.

Another focal point will be Phoenix’s ability to defend the perimeter. Las Vegas has shot over 40% from three in the series, led by Dana Evans, who hit five triples in Game 1. Limiting those outside looks while controlling the tempo will be essential if Phoenix hopes to extend the series.

“This team’s been here before — backs against the wall,” said Copper. “We just need to play our game and believe we can make this a series.”

What’s at Stake

A win for the Aces on Wednesday would complete a sweep and mark their third consecutive WNBA title, cementing their status as one of the league’s great dynasties. For the Mercury, it’s about pride, legacy, and resilience — playing for their fans and refusing to go quietly.

Tip-off for Game 3 of the 2025 WNBA Finals is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. local) on ESPN.
