ARLINGTON, Texas (Aug. 24, 2025) — The Dallas Wings’ resilience and balanced scoring weren’t enough to overcome the Golden State Valkyries’ outside firepower on Sunday afternoon, as the expansion franchise earned a 90-81 victory before a sold-out crowd at College Park Center. The defeat dropped Dallas to 9-29 on the season, while Golden State improved to 19-18 and tightened its grip on the Western Conference playoff race.
Five Wings finished in double figures, led by Maddy Siegrist’s 16 points, five rebounds, three steals, one block, and one assist. Grace Berger notched a season-high 11 points, while Amy Okonkwo made the most of her second career game with 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Rookie guard Paige Bueckers nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine assists, but her streak of 30 consecutive double-digit scoring games came to an end. The milestone run leaves her just two shy of Candace Parker and three behind A’ja Wilson for the WNBA rookie record.
Golden State was powered by Veronica Burton’s 25-point, 13-assist double-double, while Temi Fágbénlé and Iliana Rupert added timely contributions. The Valkyries knocked down 10 of their 14 three-pointers in the second half to pull away late.
Rough Start for Dallas
Dallas began with a familiar starting lineup of Berger, Bueckers, Siegrist, Haley Jones, and Luisa Geiselsöder, but the Wings struggled to find their rhythm. Golden State opened with a 20-8 run behind Fágbénlé’s early three-pointer and Kaila Charles’ versatility. Dallas managed just 20% shooting in the first quarter and trailed 23-12 after 10 minutes.
Siegrist and Myisha Hines-Allen combined for eight points in the opening frame, but the Wings were largely stifled by the Valkyries’ defensive rotations.
Wings Surge in the Second
The momentum flipped in the second quarter as the Wings roared back with a 24-9 run. Hines-Allen and Okonkwo sparked the comeback, combining for Dallas’ first 11 points of the period. The Wings’ bench outworked Golden State, while Siegrist found openings in the midrange to keep the offense flowing.
Okonkwo, who scored 10 points in the first half, gave Dallas the lead heading into the break with a driving layup. The Wings shot 53% from the field, 50% from three, and were perfect at the line in the second quarter, outscoring Golden State 26-13 to seize a 38-36 halftime edge.
Valkyries Answer Back
Golden State flipped the script in the third quarter. Burton, who controlled the tempo all afternoon, scored 10 points and set up multiple perimeter looks as the Valkyries hit four threes in the period. Rupert connected twice from deep during an 11-3 run to close the quarter, putting the visitors back in front.
Despite a strong interior effort from Dallas, which outscored Golden State 12-4 in the paint in the frame, the Wings were outpaced from the arc and trailed 61-55 heading into the fourth.
Burton, Martin Seal the Game
The Valkyries’ perimeter shooting proved decisive in the final period. Kate Martin buried three triples off the bench, while Burton drilled two more to finish off her double-double. Golden State opened the quarter on a 13-4 run and closed it with a 17-7 surge, neutralizing Dallas’ late push.
Haley Jones carried the Wings in the fourth, scoring 11 of her 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Still, the Valkyries’ 29-point quarter, fueled by six three-pointers, was too much to overcome.
Dallas finished the night shooting 41% overall, 32% from three, and 71% at the foul line. The Wings dominated the paint 44-20 and held a 27-14 bench scoring advantage, but Golden State’s long-range accuracy tipped the balance.
Looking Ahead
The loss marked Dallas’ eighth sellout of 2025 and seventh of the regular season, underscoring the continued home support despite a challenging year. Siegrist’s consistency, Okonkwo’s emergence, and Bueckers’ historic rookie campaign provided bright spots for the Wings, but defensive lapses on the perimeter again proved costly.
The Wings conclude their three-game homestand on Wednesday, Aug. 27, when they host the Connecticut Sun at College Park Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on KFAA29. Dallas has had success against Connecticut this season, winning the first two meetings of 2025, and will look to lean on that momentum to bounce back.
