WNBA Game Recap: Wings’ Late Rally Falls Short in 88-77 Loss to Liberty

Arlington, TX, Aug. 8, 2025The Dallas Wings staged multiple comeback bids but ultimately fell 88-77 to the New York Liberty on Friday night at a sold-out College Park Center. Playing without leading scorer Paige Bueckers, Dallas (8-23) trimmed a 19-point deficit down to three late in the third quarter but couldn’t close the gap as New York (20-10) sealed the season-series win.

Arike Ogunbowale led all scorers with 17 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. The Wings’ bench provided a major lift, outscoring New York’s reserves 44-20 — just shy of a season high — with Maddy Siegrist chipping in 15 points and two rebounds in her second game back from injury, and Myisha Hines-Allen contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

Liberty Set the Tone Early

In their first game starting Haley Jones, Ogunbowale, Aziaha James, Luisa Geiselsöder, and Li Yueru, the Wings struggled to keep pace in the opening period. New York opened with a 21-8 surge, shooting 61% from the field. Four Liberty players scored six points apiece in the first quarter, while rookie guard JJ Quinerly provided a spark off the Dallas bench with four quick points.

Bench Depth Keeps Dallas Within Reach

The second quarter mirrored the first, as New York continued its momentum with a 15-6 run fueled by Emma Meesseman’s eight points. The Liberty led by as many as 19 before Dallas’ reserves — led by Siegrist and Diamond Miller — closed the half strong. Dallas won the battle on the glass 19-15 at the break, thanks in part to Yueru’s five first-half rebounds.

Third-Quarter Push Narrows the Gap

The Wings’ most dominant stretch came in the third, with Ogunbowale taking over. Scoring 12 points in the frame, she keyed a 23-9 run that cut the Liberty lead to just three. Dallas attacked the paint effectively, outscoring New York 16-6 inside and hitting 8-of-12 shots in the lane. However, a late three from Marine Johannès halted the surge, giving the Liberty a six-point cushion heading into the fourth.

Siegrist Sparks Final Push

New York stretched its lead back to 19 in the final quarter, but Siegrist delivered a flawless shooting performance in the period, going 5-of-5 for 11 points. Dallas mounted a 17-6 run to pull within seven, yet the Liberty’s balanced scoring from all five starters kept the hosts at bay.

Sabrina Ionescu led New York with 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Meesseman added a game-high eight rebounds and seven assists. Dallas finished with a 40-32 advantage on the boards and outscored New York in the paint 50-36, but the Wings’ 14.3% shooting from three-point range proved costly.

Inspiring Women Honored at Halftime

The game was also the centerpiece of the Wings’ Inspiring Women Weekend presented by GEM. At halftime, Dallas honored three leaders:

  • Jody Conradt, Naismith Hall of Fame coach, Trailblazer Woman of Inspiration Award.

  • Jennifer Bartkowski, CEO of Girl Scouts of North Texas, Community Woman of Inspiration Award.

  • Kimblery Bizor Tolbert, Dallas City Manager, Businesswoman of Inspiration Award.
