STWF Sports | FRISCO, Texas | June 21, 2026 — The Frisco RoughRiders are set to welcome a World Series-tested arm to Riders Field, as Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery is expected to begin a rehab assignment with the club Sunday night.
Montgomery is scheduled to join Frisco when the RoughRiders host the Arkansas Travelers, the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 21. The appearance would mark another important step in the veteran pitcher’s recovery from Tommy John surgery and a potential boost to the Rangers’ pitching depth later in the season.
The 33-year-old signed with Texas in February on a one-year free-agent contract, returning to the organization where he played a key role during the Rangers’ historic 2023 championship run. Montgomery was placed on the 60-day injured list in March as he continued his recovery, and Sunday’s expected outing with Frisco represents his first game action in the Rangers’ system since rejoining the club.
For the RoughRiders, the assignment brings major-league attention to the final game of their series against Arkansas. For Montgomery, it is a chance to build innings, sharpen command and test his progress in a competitive setting after an extended absence.
Montgomery’s connection to the Rangers remains a significant one. Texas acquired him during the second half of the 2023 season, and he quickly became one of the most reliable starters on the staff. In 11 regular-season starts with the Rangers that year, Montgomery posted a 2.79 ERA across 67.2 innings, providing stability to a rotation that was pushing toward October.
Jordan Montgomery’s Impact on the Rangers
His impact stretched beyond the regular season. Montgomery became a trusted postseason option as the Rangers marched to the first World Series championship in franchise history. His poise, strike-throwing and ability to work deep into games helped solidify Texas’ pitching staff during the most important stretch in club history.
Before arriving in Texas, Montgomery had already established himself as a steady major-league starter. He made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2017 after being selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of the University of South Carolina. A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Montgomery spent the first six seasons of his career in New York, recording a 3.94 ERA over 97 starts with the Yankees.
He later spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Rangers in 2023. Across his career, Montgomery has been known for his ability to change speeds, command the strike zone and give his team reliable innings from the left side.
His best full-season work came in 2023, when he finished among the league’s more effective starters. Among pitchers with at least 30 starts that season, Montgomery’s 3.20 ERA ranked seventh in the majors. That consistency made him one of the most valuable midseason additions in baseball and a key part of Texas’ championship formula.
Montgomery’s most recent MLB action came with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2024. Now back with the Rangers, his rehab assignment will be closely watched as Texas evaluates where he stands physically and how quickly he can progress toward a possible major-league return.
For Frisco fans, Sunday’s game offers a rare opportunity to see an accomplished big-league starter work in a RoughRiders uniform. Rehab assignments often bring added energy to the ballpark, and Montgomery’s résumé gives this one extra significance.
The RoughRiders enter the matchup already riding strong momentum after a productive first half of the Texas League season. Adding Montgomery to the mound, even on a rehab schedule, gives the night a different feel and creates a showcase moment at Riders Field.
For the Rangers, the priority will be measured progress. For Montgomery, it is another step toward completing his comeback. And for Frisco, it is a chance to host one of the pitchers who helped bring a championship to North Texas.
